On the 21st of March, Lauren Gregory, my bandmate and oldest + dearest friend, had a medical emergency in Berlin that required immediate hospitalization. Much to our horror, after a series of tests, the doctors informed us that Lauren's kidneys and liver were severely damaged and were shutting down. We were told that she would only live another couple of days without prompt treatment. Despite having lived in Berlin for years, Lauren's medical records were still held back in the US, so it was decided that the best course of action would be for her to be treated back in the States. I packed her things and drove her across the country to Frankfurt, where we promptly flew back to New York. Once in the hospital, Lauren's vitals began to stabilize and, after several days of rigorous treatment, began to improve. After nearly a week, she was released and began her recovery at home.
For many artists, the lack of suitable insurance is a painful reality. For individuals like Lauren, whose income is derived primarily from freelance work (in her case, as a graphic/UX designer, copywriter, and musician), getting comprehensive health insurance is essentially impossible. If you know Lauren, you know what a genuinely kind, loving, generous, and immensely talented person she is. Any bit of help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Matt
