AirTravel To Be With My Injured Dad

Donation protected
My Dad lives in Groningen, the Netherlands. He was excited that my sister is moving there in August and planned to redo the laminate flooring in his house.

On the way home the heavy bag of material most likely threw him out of balance, causing him to fall of his bicycle and hit his head on the curb.

The fall caused a blood bubble to form on his cerebral membrane, putting pressure on his brain. It caused him to be unconscious for 4 days. When he awoke he had lost most of his cognitive abilities. He was able to breathe independently but it took a few days to be able to eat and walk to the bathroom by himself again. Now he is making slow improvements in his language comprehension. With almost each passing day he is able to identify one more word and pair it up with a picture. But he still has a long way to go.

He will be moved to a rehabilitation center in the South of Holland soon. There, time will tell how much and how fast he can regain cognitive functions.

We do not want to be dissappointed but we are keeping our hopes up. There have been similar cases where people have had setbacks and have gotten worse. There have been cases where people stayed at a certain level and have had to learn to live with a different self. But there have also been cases where people steadily recovered all or some brain functioning. Hopefully he is one of the latter.

He is a strong and determined person. He is incredibly positive. Even when he cannot remember for long minutes the following thought, he does not get frustrated and angry. He can still laugh, although it is mostly with eye contact that he communicates his humor. He has never been materialistic. He has always focused on the human relationships and people in his life. And every one of his friends and family are helping and supporting in every way they can. It is heartwarming.

I am in a training program set up by BART to train Electronic Technicians. My dad was really excited that I decided to learn a trade and have the prospect of a more secure existence. He was even more excited that it involves physics, electronics and technical know-how - fields which are and always have been his passions. He would want me to finish it but it has only just started. It will run for 17 months until September 2017.

I want to be with him as much as I can. And the only break I have will be from August 1 until August 13. It would be fantastic if I could pay for a ticket so that I can be with him for that time. After that I will be in school for 4 months until I can maybe visit during Christmas again.

Please consider helping me to pay for this expensive international airplane travel. Any little bit helps!
