INTRODUCTION
My name is Sabrina and my sisters and I are raising money for medical care and recovery expenses for my Dad, Robyn.
BACKGROUND
My dad has battled many health issues over the years and has always amazed our family with his strength and endurance and bravery throughout his difficulties. The past few years have been especially difficult for him healthwise.
RECENT EVENTS
My dad had back surgery on January 23rd in desperate hopes that it would give him some pain relief and more stability after struggling with back pain and difficulty walking for the past few years . After his back surgery he had a number of complications resulting in a mini-heart attack, blood loss that required a blood transfusion, and 2 more smaller back surgeries. However, he managed to get through that scary and very painful week. He was then transferred to a temporary care facility where he could recover from surgery and receive physical therapy to regain strength to walk again.
While in the care facility he was beginning to make some recovery, getting a bit stronger.
THE BIG EVENT
On February 19th, while in the facility, he had a Stroke. He was transported to the hospital where they did tests and determined that it was due to a clot in the brain. He was not able to receive the stroke medication called TPA due to it being too high risk from having had back surgery so recently. They sent him by ambulance to another hospital that specializes in stroke care and determined that the clot had already caused extensive damage and they would not be able to surgically remove the clot safely.
THE EFFECTS
The stroke effected my dad's ability to speak at all and his ability to move the entire right side of his body. He is unable to walk or sit up on his own. He also has difficulty swallowing, so he is on a special pureed diet with thickened water. It has been two weeks and the recovery process has been very slow. He is awake and aware, but it will be a long road to recovery. He has been in a care facility where they are providing care and therapy services.
HIS NEEDS/MOVING FORWARD
His insurance (Medi-cal) is only going to cover the cost of the care facility until the end of March. Due to this, he will be returning home with my mom and she will be his full time care giver. (My sisters and I will be supporting her in this) He will need extensive 24/7 care through this recovery process, which could take a year or more. He will require a hospital bed specific for stroke patients, a reclining wheelchair, a special diet, many medications, and medical transport services for all of his doctor and therapy appointments. All of these things are expenses that will add up quickly. Due to my mom taking on his full time care, she will no longer be able to work at another job to financially provide for her and my dad comfortably.
HIS CHARACTER
My dad has always been a very private person and never liked to accept any charity, help, or pity from anybody. But he always went above and beyond to help anybody else in need. He has always put his family first and himself last. My family and I had to think long and hard before deciding to create this gofundme because of how private my dad is. But of all the people I know, he is the most deserving man and he deserves to receive the best care that we can give him and the best chance at recovery and we cannot do it without help from others.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
If you can help contribute or just share this post so that as many people can see it as possible, my family would be forever grateful. My dad is only 62 years old and deserves to have many more wonderful quality years of life with his wife, daughters, and granddaughters. Your donation will help us to do everything we can to make sure he has an opportunity to do that.
