I want to start off by saying that this is a very hard thing for us to do. We are not the type to ask for finical help, but life has thrown us a couple curve balls these last couple months and starting to become financially straining.
Our family:Myself Cate, my husband Ted who is proudly a US Navy Master at Arms and our two full of energy boys,Teddy and Mikey. We are currently stationed in Newport Rhode Island.
A 'quick 'medical history: About three years ago, when we moved to RI our now four year old Teddy started experiencing some medical issues. Our healthy baby started having these scary 'seizure like episodes' where he lost the ability to hold himself or his head up. The doctors still don't know exactly what these episodes are.
However in April his Neurologist at Mass General Hospital ordered for an MRI scan, during which they discovered a Cerebellar Brain Tumor. Unfortunately they believe the tumor has nothing to do with his episodes. In July we went back for a follow up scan to check the growth rate of the tumor. Though the tumor looks the same on the scan, clinically he is showing signs of it growing such as weakness on the whole right side of his body. So the oncologist thinks it's time to intervene. Teddys tumor is inoperable, so he will have to undergo atleast 15months of chemotherapy.
We are supposed to be PCSing to Bremerton Washington in September but the oncologist does not feel comfortable waiting that long to intervene. Right now the Navy does not have the budget funding to send my husband a month early to Washington. So though it will be tough, the best thing for my son is for him Mikey and I to move to Washington and my husband will meet us there.
This plan is nice because right after we received Teddys diagnosis it completely changed our life outlook and what is actually important to us. We decided spending all our housing allowance on rent was not it! We think it is more important to take trips as a family to do and see new things together, to actually live.So we decided to go tiny and bought an RV!! It's older and has some character, but nothing wrong with that! So with having the rv we can make the drive across and have a nice family vacation before starting treatment.
The downside to this plan is, we will have to pay for the whole move out of pocket, since the Navy does not have the funding right now. Moving a family across the country is pretty expensive.
This is why we are asking for help! So we can get across country give the boys a trip of a lifetime, get Teddy the treatment he needs at one of the best hospitals in the country, also for childcare for Mikey during chemo days. I feel bad enough that Teddy has to waste part of his childhood in a hospital, I don't want Mikey to have to either.
Like I said in the beginning I hate having to ask for help, but we are just put in a situation that we need it and hope one day to pay it forward! Thank you very much for reading our story
