My goal is to help the family of my son's best frind. Joey helped make my sons transition into kindergarten a comforting one. Joey is an active, competitive and playful child. Joey, 6 years old, was there to look out for my son and to see the friendship that it developed into is nothing short of heartwarming.
Today, my son's best friend, Joey Povio and his family received the most earth shattering news. Joey was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma.
Retinoblastoma is a rare cancer that begins in the retina of the eye. The retina is a thin layer of nerve tissue that lines the inside of the back of the eye and is sensitive to light. In order to see, the retina senses light and sends a message by way of the optic nerve to the brain.
Retinoblastoma can occur in one or both eyes and sometimes occurs in the area around the eye. It rarely spreads to other parts of the body. Treatment depends on whether the cancer is in one or both eyes or has spread outside the eye and how likely it is that vision can be saved.
About 200 to 300 children are diagnosed with retinoblastoma each year in the U.S. Although retinoblastoma can occur at any age, it usually occurs in children younger than 5 years.
My goal with this fundraiser is to do my best to show Joey and his family what the definition of #JoeyStrong is all about! I want everyone to think of their child. Think about how much your child means to you. Children are not suppose to have to fight. Children are supposed to live, play, love and be carefree. Joey is a child. He is a son to wonderful parents . He is a brother. He is a friend! Joey will fight this battle through future evaluations and treatments.
Together WE can help his family ease their minds with the financial hardships of traveling, lodgings, treatments and all that comes with the fight that is ahead for Joey and his family. As I write this, my eyes are filled with tears, as I am a parent myself. This young man is my sons best friend. This young man has made an impact on so many and will continue to do so as we watch and follow along with Joey's fight. #JoeyStrong isn't just a hashtag or saying, it's a new way of life. Everyone needs to be #JoeyStrong for Joey and the entire Povio family. Please join me in helping this wonderful family and an amazing child.
