Hello friends and family!
I have spent the last 5 weeks volunteering at the BraveHearts National Borey for Infants and Children (NBIC). This program is based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and is dedicated to providing extra care and resources for orphaned HIV positive children and orphaned children with special needs. The children here have disabilities such as cerebral palsy, autism, blindness, Down syndrome, muscular dystrophy, malnutrition and birth defects. This center currently cares for over 115 children. Due to cultural stigma surrounding disabilities and adoption restrictions in Cambodia most of the children here will spend their entire lives at the center. With the limited resources available the caregivers (we call them the mamas) and staff here spend 24/7 maintaining a positive quality of life for each child. There is so much love here and I want to spend the next month raising money to help buy much needed supplies. I am using $500 of my own money for this project but I also wanted to reach out to see if anyone else would like to contribute. I plan on using these donations to purchase supplies at markets in Phnom Penh to give back to the local economy. By buying the supplies directly the orphanage can make use of these much needed items immediately. I will also post pictures after so you can see exactly what your money went towards!
Here is a list of items I want to buy:
~Diapers (much needed)**
~Clothing (especially needed for the older children)
~Disinfectants (liquids and wipes)
~Hand sanitizers
~Baby wipes
~Physiotherapy equipment (much needed)
~Upgrades to the wheelchairs (much needed)
~Maintenance and cleaning supplies (to upkeep the center’s hygiene and sanitation)
~Skin care creams, lotions, and oils
~Dietary supplements for malnourished children
~Tooth paste and tooth brushes
~Stimulating toys and activities
~Food (specifically proteins like eggs, meat and fish)
~Pillows and foam wedges to alleviate pressure sores
~Small inflatable pool for bathtime
~School supplies for the children currently attending school (very exciting!!!)
**over 100 of the children at the center use diapers and they are in constant need for more. I am hoping to contribute at least a 2-month supply.
I will be working directly with the mamas and the staff to find out exactly what is most needed. Any donation that you can give will make a difference, $5.00 can buy a box of 60-100 diapers. Any extra money raised will go towards buying medication and paying for dental and medical treatments.
I have been blown away by the amount of love and joy that radiates from the children and the staff at the NBIC. They are deserving of so much help and support. Thank you so much for any contribution you can make. It means the world to me and these beautiful children.
