Abbe's CD for Cancer Research
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Abbe Davis www.abbe-davis.com and I’m a professional singer/songwriter. I am trying to raise money for a recording session at $500 (and then I am putting in my own saved money to record a full cd of my rock songs at DNP Productions, with my band. The cd serves three purposes, a. we send it to you if you donate $25.oo, b. We raise awareness about colon cancer and how age 48 is the new, earlier screening age for men based on important research this year, and c. we get to put money into Gastrointestinal Research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA. (80 cents of every dollar raised goes right into the actual research.) Finally, our added perk is our plan to shop it to producers and more, hoping to get picked up by a label. Our local shows begin in Sept.
Background
It feels like everywhere we turn lately, someone we care about is struggling with cancer. Eighteen years ago, I lost my father to colon cancer and it still hurts as if it were yesterday. He was only 73. I adored my dad. He understood my ways and introduced me to great music: Billy Joel, Neil Diamond, Glen Campbell, Jazz, etc. And I returned the favor through my gigs where he'd come hear me sing live. We sang a lot at home. Either we'd make up lyrics or we'd sing Beatles tunes or Jimmy Buffett or some jazz song; having a great time bonding through music.
When he passed it was a huge shock to me. In order to soothe some of my grief, I decided to begin giving to causes.
My First Contribution: Cancer Research at D.F.
Years ago, a co-worker and friend told me how he and his friends were going to sign up again for the Pan Mass Challenge - cycling through MA in two days- to raise money for Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and would I want to join their group? He'd lost his mom to cancer and knew I had just lost my dad. After I looked at him like he was crazy, I walked home that day and thought, "Those hills are tough and for many miles, I don't even have a bike, I need a sign....How can I possibly do this?" Two days later a check showed up in the exact amount I needed to buy a solid bike for the 150 mile ride. I still have my Cannondale bike, it's family now.
And the training began! Mega hill training, learning to unlock bike pedals while braking, learning to change my tire, and pacing, etc. The 2 day ride went well, my mom was there and oddly, at the finish line- arms locked with my group, I searched for my dad, yearning to share this with him and forgetting he was gone. The tears fell as my mom and I hugged. Later, I contributed the $5,000.00 earned through friends and family, right into gastrointestinal cancer in my father’s name.
Presently
Through my music, this year I hope to contribute to Dana Farber in my dad's name: Samuel Sheradsky. My dad was an honorable, well-liked, attorney. He also happened to be a loving father, brother and grandfather. Not only did he live a very healthy lifestyle with playing handball and running, he was a champion in the courtroom, too. He went the mile for every kind of case or client. Sam was a spiritual, caring person.
At Tru-Fit and the Parkinson's Fitness Center of South Florida, where my husband trains all kinds of fitness clients, and also does amazing Kinesio-Arts, his unique specialized training for people with young onset Parkinson’s Disease, we've worked with raising funds and grant money for: Parkinson’s, M.S., Cerebral palsy, cancer and heart disease. Our affiliations have been withThe United Cerebral Palsy Foundation, The National Parkinson's Foundation and more. Our charity goes on.
Dana - Farber Gastrointestinal is currently studying risk factors for colon cancer, stomach cancer, and pancreatic cancer every day in over 170,000 people.Today's studies have found that the best way for early detection is that men begin to have colonoscopy exams by the age of 48. My dad’s life would have been saved had he gotten tested earlier and knew this back then.
For anyone who donates $25 or more, I will give you a copy of the cd. For those who contribute $100, I’d like to also include your name on my cd with special thanks. We hope that by mid August we can raise the money we need in order to raise awareness, create and share our music, and for important research.
Let’s never give up hope and let’s always give back.
I thank you, my band thanks you, our friends who are going through cancer right now thank you, and somehow I know, my father thanks you, too!
