“That’s What She Said” Art Project
Donation protected
In the wake of recent controversies regarding Canada’s statues and monuments, discussions around representation in society, one simple and inarguable question remains, “ Where are all the women?”. We can argue the historical accuracy, or flash points of injustice, but still “ Why have we forgotten the women? Where is the diversity? Why are their contributions not celebrated and their stories told?
That is how “The Shanly Street Art Project: #That’s what She Said“ was imagined and began. One sidewalk painting at a time. The process of painting each face gave me purpose, as I learned more about each women and their accomplishments in the face of adversity, it gave me the strength to keep going. To date, there are over 40 stencilled images of incredible women with an accompanying quote or message to inspire self love, courage and social engagement. This project honours women who have met challenges, envisioned a better society, and made change. It encourages other women to see themselves represented and feel empowered to imagine themselves as a valuable and necessary voice for change.
The project has been overwhelming, the response of people positive and sometimes heart wrenching:
“ I was having the worst day...”
“ Mommy! Look!”
“ I’ll have to look her up”
“ I love her, who is next?”
" Now I run on Shanly Street"
People come out of their houses, talk with each other and stand a little taller. And they ask, "How can I Help?"
The plan is to continue to add images as requests keep pouring in. The dream is to produce creative arts & education based packs complete with stencils and references for each woman to start the journey of discovery. These images can be included in conversations and activities for student programming.
To that end, I’m asking for your help to try and make this possible.
Your donation will help purchase art supplies and equipment so that this project can continue and meet its goal.
