This is my mother Lillian Guild and here is our story. In February, we moved Mom from Independent Living in California to the Casita behind our house her in New Orleans. When we got her, she had been in a skilled nursing facility for three months and was in pretty rough shape both physically and mentally. Over the last four months, she regained much of her physical health. We hoped that as her overall health improved, her mental status would too. Unfortunately, this has not been the case.
Two years ago, we were told that she had “mild cognitive impairment.” Two weeks ago, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. She has good, clear days and then other days she is confused, disoriented and agitated.
My parents dedicated their whole life to the SDA church as local clergy, missionaries and working with the VOP. While missionaries they did not pay into Social Security, (it was not an option for them). When they came back to the US, they went to work for the VOP and did their best to save money towards retirement. They saved some but not nearly enough to cover the cost of Alzheimer's care. We used all of our savings to move her to the Casita in February and are out of resources.
So, here is the part where we are asking for your help.
I promised my Dad that we would take care of Mom after he passed. We are committed to doing that. We believe that taking care of her here at home is our best alternative. To do this effectively, however, we need to move her into our house since living alone in the casita is no longer an option. We need to get this done ASAP!
We need cash to add a bath that is handicap equipped and make some changes within the house so that she will be safe and as comfortable as possible. We estimate that we can do what we need to do for $5,000.
Mom needs a safe environment and we need your help! I love my Mom and want to do everything we can to make her last days as pleasant as possible up to and including starting this campaign. We are grateful for any help!
Thank you in advance!
