Pieta House and North Kildare RFC Charity Cycle

East to West for Pieta House 2021!

In 2020, a small group of 5 very infrequent and recreational cyclists attempted a cycle from Maynooth to Currane near Achill Island, (East to West) located on Mayo's Wild Atlantic Way, Circa 285km from door to door. They were members of North Kildare Rugby Football Club who play at The Maws, Kilcock, Co. Kildare

They did this, to raise money for Pieta House who provide free therapy to those engaging in self-harm, with suicidal ideation, or bereaved by suicide.

Pieta House rely on the generosity of the public whose donations and fundraising make up over 80% of our income. They, along with a lot of Charitable Organisations have had their Fundraising capabilities hampered because of Covid 19 restrictions.

Their cycle also raised money for their local Rugby Club, North Kildare RFC who along with many Amateur Sports Clubs rely on fundraising events throughout the year to fund the normal running of the Club. NKRFC have had their normal fundraising activities severely curtailed in both 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19 restriction.

All funds raised were split 50/50 with the two Organisations.

The cycle was completed in one day – they set off at 4am and arrived in Currane at 10pm on the same day – a tremendous but arduous single day of cycling!  They were applauded warmly by a great group of domestiques and supporters who had traveled there to see them finish.

We are pleased to announce that they intend to attempt the East to West cycle again on July 22nd 2021. They hope to add some more cyclists to their group this year

- Full Distance participants – from Maynooth to Currane
- Stage Participants - Those who can cycle along one or more of the four stages of this year’s cycle.
- Family Participants –Families will complete their own target distance cycle. Many groups from the Junior section will participate in this                                                        fashion for 2021.
- Static Participants- Senior team members will complete one or more hour-long stages on a gym bike outdoors in Maynooth town and                                                          replicate the full cycle – probably in much shorter time than the main group!

This year their efforts will once again be in aid of the same charity – Pieta House, and the same club – North Kildare Rugby Club.  In Particular, the funds will be used to help the formation of the North Kildare Skylarks. This is an adapted tag rugby team for children between 5 -14 years, with additional needs. It will be a truly great addition to the ever-growing Junior section of North Kildare RFC. This new team will be the 20th adapted tag rugby team in the Leinster area.
