In Support of Mercedes' Family

Our names are Meredith Berninger and Noelle Wilson, and we are close family friends of the Chimento’s. As many of you know, after a 13-year battle with cancer Mercedes passed away on Sunday morning, August 21, 2016. Those who knew and loved Mercy will always remember her as a bubbly, energetic woman who could talk about anything and make anyone feel right at home.
She was generous to a fault, kind to everyone who crossed her path, and always willing to help someone in need. It makes sense that she chose nursing as her career! Mercy dedicated 32 years working as a registered nurseat SUNY Downstate Hospital in Brooklyn, Jersey City Medical Center, and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson. She began with bedside nursing, and later became an instructor for critical care. After working in the hospitals, Mercy spent the remaining 14 years of her career tirelessly devoting her time, energy, and love to taking care of children and adolescents in the Newark public school systems until she retired in June of 2015. She truly was a special person; she treated each of her patients like they were a member of her family. Mercy made everyone she touched feel special.

Mercy’s main priority was always the health and happiness of her friends and family. She and her husband Richie were the bestof partners – where you saw one of them, there was the other not far behind! They were inseparable and very much in love. Mercy was also an amazing mother not only to her daughter Ali, but also to her niece, nephews, and her daughter’s friends. Her home had an open door policy – everyone was welcome for a good conversation and a good meal! We really can’t put into words how much Mercy meant to everyone around her.

On behalf of Mercy’s husband Richie, her daughter Ali, and their family, we are asking for your help. Ali is about to begin her senior year of nursing school and works part-time as a nursing assistant, and Richie will begin a new school year as a social worker for the Newark Public schools. Although they no longer have any medical expenses, their battle with cancer has taken a large financial toll and they are now facing serious hardship. Any donations will be used to help Richie and Ali get back on their feet, and allow them time to grieve without worrying about financial burdens.
If you are able, any contribution, no matter what the size, will mean so much to their family. Mercy was an incredibly strong, dedicated, and loving woman who has touched the lives of many. We all love and miss her.
