Cotter Pin's surgery from accident

Donation protected
My beloved dog Cotter Pin was struck by a car Thursday evening. My electric fence was broken during construction in my yard and unfortunately Cotter realized this. He has a strong nose and being a hound he left the yard. Not knowing he had crossed, I missed him for a moment and called for him. Unfortunately he then was struck by a vehicle when he was attempting to cross back over the street. I live on a main road with constant traffic. It was awful. I didn't see it but heard the screeching brakes and Cotter cry out. It makes me sick to think about it. He somehow made it home limping severely as I was rushing to the street. He then laid down and I knew he was hurt badly. I rushed him to Pieper Olson in Middletown. They have been exceptionally good about his care and are doing the best they can.

Upon getting to the hospital they took him right in. His blood pressure was dropping and they gave him fluids, which seemed to help him a bit. But the doctor called me at 4:00 this morning and told me Cotter had taken a turn for the worse. He was bleeding internally and needed immediate surgery. A surgeon was called in and as of this writing, 1:40 in the afternoon Friday, he is still in surgery but he is holding out well under anesthesia.

His diagnosis is a severed/ruptured urethera, a damaged spleen and prostrate. Also, his left rear leg was severely injured with some tendon/ligament damage.

I feel awful for asking for this kind of help but the cost of his care is more than I can afford at nearly $14,000. Upon dropping him off I paid only $1,365 because it was the low estimate on his immediate care at the time. But after realizing the extent of the injuries, the surgeon etc., the cost of surgery and care has now gone over $10,000. It will likely be more because he has to stay in the hospital for about a week. The fear is the urethera, after suturing, will shrink and it will be difficult and need more surgery. Hopefully, with staying in the hospital he will have a better chance at recovery. Also, after the life threatening situation he is in resolves itself, they can look at his leg and go from there. The doctor is going to  try putting it back into socket while he is under from the internal surgery, but with the damage he may need to have it removed worst case scenerio. They estimate that will be another $2,000.

Those of you who know me know I don't have children. And I think you realize how I think of my pets as children. Cotter has always had a distinct place in my heart. He is mischievous (much like me as a kid!), and he is a character! He is also incredibly smart. I miss him so! I am relieved that if all goes well I will have him back. I know he's strong and I pray that he makes it.

I know this is my cross to bear, especially financially. I humbly ask that if you can assist with any donation it would help immensely.

Please don't feel you need to give anything. Just your prayers and support would mean the world to me. My dogs are my family and I need them all in my life.

Thank you.
