Saturday, August 13 Carly Scharmack's life changed in a split second.
While on vacation with her husband in California they enjoyed a relaxing morning with his parents and brothers. They planned to visit Malibu Creek State Park that afternoon after a later start than expected. Drew and Carly are avid outdoor enthusiasts. They are full of life and enjoy living an outdoor life. Once they arrived at the park, they were immediately taken by the beauty of the location itself. After taking a few leaps into the pools with the brothers in tow, they decided on hiking up to the top pool before they left for the evening. Leeaving Drew's parents below, they headed up. Truly enjoying this moment in life, they met an avid climber along the way who pointed them in the right direction, not knowing that his life too was about to change. Drew and his brother went ahead to make sure the way was safe and Drew turned back to see his wife take a mis-step. Carly fell nearly 30 feet through a narrow chasm into standing water. The climber they had just met heard Drew scream for his wife. He knew by the following silence it wasn't good. Scrambling down with Drew, they pulled her from the water. She was unconscious and was not breathing. Drew started chest compressions while 911 was called. After 45 minutes, Carly was taken across the rock pool to be airlifted to UCLA. Carly fought for her life with her husband at her side for days. Their families have been holding their breath in the nearest waiting room. Carly has multiple skull and facial fractures, traumatic brain injury as well as other injuries, yet her neurosurgeon is amazed by the progress she has made. Carly is a fighter!! Drew and Carly will need to arrange travel back to Washington State. They have no idea of the care that will be necessary after she leaves ICU and what is anticipated beyond that. They also have a home and pets to consider. Carly is making leaps and bounds in her healing with her husband at her side. Thank you for your generosity in helping Drew focus his love and attention on the care of his wife and best friend.
