Emma’s Dance Short Film: The Second

Donation protected
Hello!

Thank you so much for taking the time to learn about The Second's GoFund me campaign.

A little about me: I’ve been dancing professionally in New York City for the past 4 years, training with Alvin Ailey, Mark Morris, Jennifer Muller the Works, and the Broadway Dance Center. And as a current member of eSKay Arts Collective—sponsored by The Performance Zone Inc (The Field) a nationally registered 501(c)(3) organization—I’ve decided to delve into pieces that empower and raise awareness about various political and social justice issues. Last year, I choreographed a piece that addressed the inequalities on America’s oral healthcare system, known as the silent epidemic. This piece was inspired by the book, “Teeth: The Story of Beauty, Inequality, and the Struggle for Oral Health in America” by Mary Otto. It was presented at Triskelion Arts and Dixon Place in New York City. You can learn more about my work and performance experience by visiting www.emmacolton.com

"The Second" is a short dance film that aims to remind communities in our country of an ongoing public health epidemic: gun violence. In the last 10 years, 6 of the deadliest mass shootings in modern US history have occurred, and our government continues to blame mental illness, not the guns: this is our new reality. What the media doesn't show is the impact these shootings have on children and teen's mental health. Elementary, middle schools, high schools and universities implement active shooter drills to prepare students from gunmen. We should be changing our gun laws, not making students go through  traumatic drills. This dance film aims to showcase ALICE drills also know as active shooter drills and breakdown the movement involved so that parents, lawmakers and all US citizens can see what our country has become.

In order to to create a safer world for future generations, we need to change our laws to prevent more mass shootings. I am passionate on using the arts in spreading this message, as I believe dance creates an immersive experience and strong emotional connection, leaving a more impactful reaction and message. My hopes are not only to raise awareness about political issues, but to empower the artists involved in this film. This is an opportunity to promote their authenticity and artistry. This is a deeply personal project, and my goal is to submit the final piece to acclaimed dance film festivals, so it may gain as much exposure as possible.

This is how your donation would contribute to my film:

- Compensation for the production crew, dancers, light designers, musicians, and choreographer
- Camera equipment rental fees
- Costumes
- Studio rehearsal rental space
- Berkeley College Classroom Rental
- Dance film festival application fees

But most importantly, 6% of all donations will go to the GIFFORDS organization and The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence https://www.csgv.org/ , to support their critical research on gun violence in America (for more information visit https://giffords.org ).

Americans are 25 times more likely to be killed by a gun than individuals in other developed nations.100 Americans are killed by guns every day. And for more than 20 years, Congress has continued to defund the CDC in gun violence research, despite gun deaths increasing in the past three years.

I hope you join me in trying to make our country a safer place for generations to come. I am grateful for any donation.
