Help save my Jenks

Donation protected
It is with a sad and heavy heart that I am reaching out to all my friends, friends of friends, and all animal lovers out there in hopes to save a very special little boy named Jenks. Jenks is my young pup of only 4 years old and entered our lives when I decided to adopt him and save him at North Shore at a few months old. He has shown our family unconditional love and as all animal lovers know, the sacrifice we make for our four legged friends is never ending and all encompassing. This is why I reach out to everyone today.

A few months ago (mid March), I noticed my little boy was beginning to limp. I brought him immediately to the vet. It was then I learned he had hip dysplasia and would need surgery. After doing research on this surgery and realizing how major the recovery would be, I decided to get a second opinion. They explained he also needed a knee replacement on the left leg, and down the road would need a replacement on the right. It broke my heart that my dog, who was so young, was already needing a painful and traumatic surgery but of course I was willing to whatever it took to help him. In the meantime, I also took Jenks to a holistic vet to learn all the ways in which I could help him. After many visits, and bills, I had Jenks on many holistic medicine treatments, hoping that it could begin to aid his discomfort as the vet hoped a few months could show an 80 percent change for the better. Unfortunately, Jenks only got worse.

I was devastated because Jenks was so young, needing such big surgeries, but I knew I couldn’t let him down and wanted to give him the best chance at the long and happy life he deserves.

The day of the surgery arrived. I dropped him off and waited by the phone. When it rang earlier than expected, I nervously picked up to find out a bad situation just became even worse. The vet said that his heart rate was too low and they could not perform the surgery and that I now had a new concern on my hands as I now had to see a cardiologist immediately.

It was the look on the cardiologist’s face that told me, Jenks had a long road ahead. He explained that Jenks has a disease called Degenerative Valve Disease (a complete heart block) and needs a pacemaker implantation immediately. He explained how costly it was, and how necessary for the surgery to take place as soon as possible as each day is a risk. Jenk’s heart rate is so low, that when he goes to sleep each night and it gets even lower, there is a chance he may just not wake up. I looked at my poor pup, tail wagging as he rushed to my lap, and put my head down as the tears were streaming.

After seeing a few more cardiologists who all repeated the same information and same costs, and all of whom stressed the necessity and urgency, a choice was put before me. Some vets sat me down and explained that they understand the costs and realize this is a huge sacrifice, being that after this heart surgery, Jenks then needs to recover and go through a knee replacement and other surgeries down the road They all hinted at something I couldn’t initially comprehend, and then their pity-filled stares and suggestions spelled it out: They’d understand if I wanted to put Jenks down. Many people wouldn’t spend thousands upon thousands of dollars into a dog so young, knowing the future would consist of replacing the valves, more possible surgeries, knee replacements, medicines, doctor visits, and all the other unknowns. Even some friends and family, knowing I had exhausted all my funds into all the vets and treatments up until this point also tried to help me feel better by saying I’ve done everything I could.

I am not giving up on Jenks. I can’t give up on this little boy who has never given up on me, who shows unconditional love, strength and is deserving of living a happy life. I will not give up on my little boy. I understand the costs of the surgeries entailed far exceed what I am able to afford. I understand that I have used all of my funds already and that the road that lies ahead is even longer. But I also understand that there is a whole world of people out there that believe in the human spirit, of commencing together to give any little amount in order to do what it takes to save a life. I know now, the day I adopted Jenks was destiny. That he was given to me because Jenks needed a Mommy who wouldn’t give up on him and that would do everything to save him. Now Jenks will have a lot of Mommies and family and caretakers who hopefully will all come together to help me save his life. I am asking anyone and everyone out there to share this story, to do anything you can in hopes to give Jenks a chance at the life he deserves. Even a dollar and a share will bring him one step closer to being saved. Anyone that has a dog knows, they are more than best friends, they are family, and the only ones who will always love unconditionally. I am now doing my best to give my Jenks just an ounce of that unconditional love, sacrifice and support that he has given to me. I hope and pray that each person who sees this, will donate any amount as small as it is, and take a minute to share his story, and hopefully with all of your help, Jenks will have a lot of family and friends to thank out there for saving his lif for being able to live out his life. Thank you to everyone.
