Memorial Tree for Dave Finkelman
Donation protected
As you all know Dave Finkelman ascended from this earth January 27th, 2014. This coming september he would have been turning 30 years old. We have been thinking that Dave needs a permanent resting site, away from the traffic and noise of whyte avenue and that corner where he was struck and his journey cut short. For his birthday this year we want to plant a tree for him to honour his legacy and give friends and family a place to visit and revel in memory and nature.
The commemorative tree planting is a service offered by the city, to not only aid in urban forestry, but to mark the imporantance of Dave's life in all of ours.
The top 2 sites which will be looked into for the tree are:
- Big Miller Park, in front of the Yardbird Suite
or
-End of Steel Park, across from the Yardbird over looking the city.
As a longtime member and contributor to the Edmonton musical landscape, the space around the yardbird seems like the perfect choice for the tree as it is one of the longest running Jazz clubs in Canada.
The Tree will be a Burr Oak Tree. The Oak tree is a Large, Slow growing tree that symbolizes strength and power. The oak is considered a cosmic storehouse of wisdom embodied within its towering strength.
Ancient Celts observed the oak's massive growth and impressive expanse. They took this as a clear sign that the oak was to be honored for its endurance, and noble presence.
Currently I do not believe there is an Oak tree in either of those parks, and my conversation with the City Trees representative was that these trees make a bold statement and provide a classic warmth to the space.
While this tree is Deciduous, meaning its leaves will turn bronze and fall off in the winter, it does have the advantage of bearing nuts, with large crops every few years.
The cost of planting the tree, with maintenance, and a bronze plaque is 1600$.
The Plaque will read:
In loving memory of David Finkelman
September 14, 1986 - January 27, 2014
TAKE ENERGETIC ACTION
As mentioned we want this tree to be a part of Dave's 30th Birthday celebration, and to get across all the red tape and bureaucracy involved we will need to try to have these funds together within the next couple weeks. We wanted to open it up to all of you, Dave's friends, family and community members, because even if you can only donate $5, your contribution will be felt by all of us and help give You a chance to be a part of this legacy.
