I am trying to raise money for my friend to get a mechanical wheelchair to give him a better quality of life.
In 2015 Matt suffered a brain injury, he was in a coma for a week and in hospital for 6 months. The brain injury effected the right side of his body, his speech, memory, reading, hand control in both hands and the ability to use his right leg. He has made so much progress and is very lucky to be alive. I’m really proud of him.
Matt has carers that come round a few times a week to clean his place, take him food shopping and help him with setting up his bills etc. He has family and friends but they don’t live close to him. Other than that he is house bound due to his mobility issues and not being able to coordinate his fingers or read the only thing he has to occupy himself is listening to music and watching TV.
Any way I found out the the other day that Matt had ran out of milk and it was 2 days until his next visit. Craving a cup of tea he decided to go to the shop in his wheel chair. The nearest shop is probably 7 minutes for able bodied people to walk, with a slight hill. It took him around 30 minutes as he kept having to stop to catch his breath. By the time he got there he was too tired to wheel back so he asked a stranger to wheel him back home. The stranger was happy to help (what a lovely person!) and Matt got home safely but when I found out I was horrified, it could have been a very different story. He said he will not do this again.
I have taken Matt out a few times and his wheel chair is very hard to push for me so we don’t tend to go out much when I visit. He needs mechanical chair so he can reclaim a bit of independence. Would be great for his well-being and mental health for him to be able to pop to the shops when he needs to, visit the park in the summer and eventually hop on the buses to visit his dad (all things he can’t do with his current chair) I have looked into hiring mobility scoters or mechanical wheel chairs but the costly monthly payments are not affordable to him plus he needs this for the rest of his life.
Before the brain injury, Matt was an outdoorsy person, we used to always take the kids camping and on long country walks so it’s a real shame that he is practically housebound now. I would be grateful for any donations no matter how much as everything adds up.
Having this chair would really enhance his life!
