Who I am
Hey y’all
My name is Dykee Gorrell and I am a Dark Skin Black Transgender Nonconforming Queer Femme who is the descendant of enslaved Africans. My geopolitical location is the United States of America, the seed of Global White-Cis-Hetero-Patriarchal-Colonial-Imperialist-Capitalist Empire.
That being said, I am a senior at Hampshire College, a very small college in Amherst Massachusetts, who concentrates in African and African Diaspora Studies. I am an organizer and Activist with Decolonize Media Collective, a student group dedicated to the Liberation of Black People and the Abolition of the Prison State. I am originally from Los Angeles California by way of Delano, California. I am 1 of 8 children birthed from my Shero, Mama. I have to avoid using her government name on these sites, she wouldn’t like that, lol.
My Project In Durban, South Africa
As a Senior at Hampshire College I am tasked with writing a Senior Thesis. Instead of taking this for granted I want to take this opportunity to expand my own skills and knowledge to become a better organizer and activist. After exploring, for three years, issues of Black Death, Trans Violence, and White Imperialism I decided to write about a topic that is very personal and close to my heart. I will be conducting a comparative analysis of Prisons in the United States and South Africa with a specific focus on Poor Black Transgender Femme populations. I will be attempting to understand the process in which identity is born and the need to categorize people within these identities as it relates to mass incarceration and Empire building. Through analyzing Prisons I am attempting to expand our understanding of Genocide, War, Colonization, Imperialism, and Patriarchy as tools of Global White Empire.
What is more is that I will be traveling to Durban, South Africa this Fall to conduct interviews with formerly incarcerated Black Transgender Femme organizers and activist about the many issues facing our community in South Africa.
I Really Need Y’all Help
As of July 1st, I have applied to countless scholarships and grants trying to fundraise enough money to go to South Africa but I have been unsuccessful. I am almost at my goal y’all. I need $5,500 to pay for the rest of the SIT program as well as some of the cost and living. Also, I will be using the money to travel to and from South Africa as well as domestic travel in South Africa.
That being said, I leave August 17th. That means I have about a month and a half to fundraise $5,500 to attend this trip. If y’all could support me by donating as much money you can and sharing my Go Fund Me amongst your friends family and peers, this would mean the world.

I want to thank y’all for supporting the work that I do as well as allowing me to continue some of the critical work needed to get All Black people, around the world, free. Often times Black Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Femme folk experiences are ignored. Our Incarceration. Our Humanity. Our Death. Our entire existence is disposed of. I live to break this cycle. Please help me break this cycle.
