Valentina has always been a happy, healthy girl with a beautiful personality. She is 6-years-old and an only child with loving, hardworking parents who are well aware that eating clean is the medicine to a healthier life. For the first time, they decided to let Valentina stay with her grandparents for a week in Colombia where they live. While in their care, they did what most grandparents do and showered her with love and treats. Unfortunately, Valentina has an illness that has gone undetected called Type 1 Diabetes. She had been feeling dizziness for a couple of days but on the morning of Tuesday, June 28th she started having blurry vision. Her grandmother had a gut instinct to check Valentina's sugar levels and found that it was over 400 mg/dl. The average person's glucose levels can range between 100-140 mg/dl. Having diabetes herself, her grandmother knew to rush Valentina to the hospital. Upon arriving they found that she already had swelling in her brain and pancreas. Hours later she slipped into a coma and has been on life support since. Friday, July 1st is the first time she has been responsive but will continue to be in ICU until she is completely stabilized. Currently, her blood glucose has not dropped lower than 300 mg/dl.
Not only have her parents had to worry about their daughter's well being, the family is starting to face financial hardship. Her parents have health insurance but it's not valid in Colombia. Unfortunately, in Colombia payment must be made first or no treatment is given. This goes for all testing, medicines, and examinations. Because she is still in critical condition, they can not transfer her over to the United States. They have started depleting all of their funds to pay for everything that is and was needed to keep Valentina alive. Both parents are on leave without pay to be by their daughter's side and money is becoming tight even for the simplest of tests.
We are not sure how much longer she will be in ICU or, if and when, they might be able to transfer her. As this may be, we know that this is only the beginning of their journey. Because of this, we have decided to reach out to all that are able to help this beautiful family by donating whatever you can. We appreciate all donations given no matter the size, every cent helps. All money raised is going directly to the family so that they can pay for any medical treatments, medicines, and testing but, to also pay off their bills here, so they have a home to come back to in Houston, Texas.
Thank you in advance for your time and donations.
