“An animal’s eyes have the power to speak a great language”- philosopher, Martin Buber

….and one look into Jolene’s eyes, she told us everything we really needed to know. They said that she was resilient, a fighter, a survivor, and all she really wanted, was a chance.

On May 5, 2016, Jolene was found as a stray in Cadwalder Park in Trenton.   Forsaken by those she trusted to care for her, she was alone, underweight, and barely able to walk.   Estimated to be only about 9 months old, she is still a young pup, friendless and afraid, huddling under a bush. Who knows how long this little girl hobbled through the park looking for food, shelter or a kind hand?

Thankfully she found that kind hand and was brought into our partner shelter, the Trenton Animal Shelter in Trenton, NJ.  Unable to walk very far, she spent most of her time there in the office.   Realizing that this sweet, helpless creature needed more help than they could provide, the caring staff at the Trenton Animal Shelter, contacted the Sammy’s Hope Animal Welfare and Adoption Center in Sayreville, NJ, in hope that we could give this sweet girl the help she needed …and needed fast!

Sammy’s Hope responded immediately and after a thorough behavioral evaluation, Jolene was welcomed whole-heartedly into our welfare center.  Here she has been thriving due to the proper nutrition, attention, and the endless amount of TLC she has been given by the staff and volunteers.

However, it was obvious from the moment we first saw Jolene that this little lady was going to need more than just food and love to help her have a chance at a “normal” life. With a severely deformed right leg and a left one slightly less deformed, she tore our hearts out, as she tried desperately to act like the rest of the dogs, trying to keep up on her mangled appendages.   We have provided a carriage for mobility, but if we are correctly hearing the language her eyes are speaking… she wants to walk…and she wants to walk normally, without any pain or without falling.

The great news is that this is a highly possible goal!   It was determined by an orthopedic specialist at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Tinton Falls, NJ, that Jolene’s leg could be fixed with surgery.  To have this sweet girl walk normally, for what we believe would be the very first time in her life would be a dream come true certainly for her but also for everyone at Sammy’s Hope, as well.   And since she is so young, she will reap the benefits of the surgery for many years.

Jolene has a magnificent spirit, a mischievous twinkle in her eye, and endearing puppy naiveté mixed with a truckload of gumption.   Watching her try so tirelessly to walk and not fall makes everyone else fall themselves…fall in love with her.   She has, in the weeks she has been here, supplied us with endless joy and we sincerely wish to return the favor.

Here is where we need your help. The cost of her surgery is estimated to be $4,117.   Any assistance you can provide to help defray the cost of the surgery would be greatly appreciated by all involved…especially Jolene!
