A Black American Coffee Co. Is Returning to Africa

We’ve built our black owned coffee business so far with no capital, no credit, and no investors. Just hustle, homies, and a whole lot of faith. But now we need your help. While we’d love to finance this trip on our own muscle, the reality is we haven’t even officially payed our selves yet, and the margins for a coffee business are pretty slim. While we’ve had a lot of growth, all of our income for the last year has gone directly back into our operating expenses and inventory.
Like many black Americans, we’ve never been to our ancestral land, and to be honest cannot afford a trip back home to Africa on our own. Our coffee company has always been a grassroots movement, and our heart has always been in connecting black families in America to the diaspora through black coffee.
We’re tired of being taught about coffee from hipsters. Up until now we’ve learned about the coffees black history through research, reading, and conversation with black coffee farmers and professionals, mostly over instagram. But after making a tweet about our dream to go Michael Mamo of Addis Exporters reached out and offered to host us on a educational trip to the coffee motherland.
Y’all, this is huge.
This trip would allow us to experience first hand what coffee is like outside of the colonized culture we experience in America, and build business relationships we can use to educate our youth about the true history of coffee, and create inroads for imagining a new black global future as well. We want to bring back primary source coffee content we can use to further educate and inspire the next generation of black coffee innovators in the hoods of Memphis and beyond.
We can’t event explain how much this trip would mean to us, and we can’t do it without your help.
The cost of trip includes a two week trip to Ethiopia to learn about the origins of the black coffee culture. It also all was us to guarantee the purchase at least 1000 lbs of coffee, so that we can begin to establish direct business relationships on the continent to reclaim some of generational wealth that stolen from the African diaspora through coffees growth because of the Atlantic slave trade and colonialism.
