Memorial Fund for Kao Herva

Donation protected
On August 5th, the heavens gained a beautiful soul as Kao Herva ended his battle against cancer.  He did not lose his battle to cancer.  Instead, we believe that he beat out cancer by taking away its ability to spread further.  The purpose of this go fund me account is to raise money to help Kao’s wife, Diana, pay for funeral, medical, and other life expenses.

Many people remember Kao as a uniquely kind-hearted person who was never without a smile on his face.  His contagious optimism and silliness will be sorely missed.

In 2013, at the young age of 33, he was diagnosed with Stage 3 Colon Cancer, which he fought bravely.  After having surgery and undergoing 6 months of chemotherapy, he was finally in remission.  He and his wife were finally able to continue their dream of starting a family and entering the next stage of their lives.

However, in 2015, he received the devastating news that the cancer was back and that it had metastasized – this time, it was inoperable and incurable.  Even when he was told that the best he could hope for was an average of 2 years if treatment worked, he optimistically fought back with chemotherapy, reasoning that 2 years should be enough for more treatments to be developed.  He went through two mainstream chemotherapy + immunotherapy treatments as well as a clinical trial at Stanford University.  He also endured high doses of radiation due to occlusion of his jugular vein.

By late June 2016, he was hospitalized due to significant amounts of fluid in his lung space and abdominal cavity.  He also had trace amounts of fluid building up around his heart.  Despite his faith in medicine and extreme optimism, the cancer was too aggressive and continued to progress.  As such, he was terminated from the clinical trial and was sent home with a recommendation for hospice care.  He remained hopeful that a miracle would happen and continued to smile through the pain and fatigue.

Kao reluctantly decided to retire from his job, which he loved, due to his terminal illness.  On his 7th day as a retiree, he suffered a sudden decline.  Kao passed away at home surrounded by loved ones.

This wonderful man was such an inspiration to so many people.  May his positive energy continue to flow forward in those who are left behind.
