So... y'all probably know me from my blog Fat Heffalump or perhaps you've seen me in the media somewhere.
I have been a fat activist now for over 7 years, and mostly it is a second full-time job, albeit one that almost never gets paid. I am very passionate about this work, but it's simply not sustainable without some financial help. So I'm setting this up as a method for people to donate to me as an activist and writer, so that I can continue to do the work that I do.
What is that work? It starts with a lot of reading, research and networking with other activists, academics and other professionals. I spend a lot of time sourcing important information and perspectives to share out in the wider world, to promote the message of fat activism.
From there it shifts into my writing, which I am hoping to be able to do more of if I have some funds to free me up from formal paid work. I'm so much more creative and productive with my activism writing when I don't have to worry about paying the bills!
I also spend an incredible time working on getting positive media representations for fat people. Whether it's interviews or projects that I work directly in, or challenging the media in general to shift it's focus on fat people from the negative to the positive.
And ultimately, I want to be able to expand what I do. To travel to speak at events and conferences, attend fat community events to network with and support my fellow fat activists and to be able to collaborate with other fat activists.
In the future, I would like to be able to:
* Create and maintain a regular podcast series
* Travel to fat community and academic events both within Australia and around the world.
* Upgrade my blog to a professional site.
* Publish my own writing and that of other people, to elevate voices that may not otherwise get a chance to be heard.
One of the most rewarding things about fat activism, after seeing cultural change around fat bodies (which moves at a snail's pace!) is being supported by and being able to support other fat activists and creatives. Nothing means more to me than hearing that I've helped someone live a better, fuller life in their fat body.
That's why I do what I do, and why I'd like some help to continue doing that.
Any size donation is welcome, any time. Every dollar helps.
