Holla Techno Friends
My name is Shane Fontane, and I'm a product designer, D.J., and music producer living in the Bay Area. I want to run a series of Go Fund Me campaigns, each raising funds for a local D.J./creator/artist impacted by COVID-19 shutdowns, called Tech For Techno. With your support, we can provide financial relief for those in our electronic music scene.
Our last campaign, Tech For Techno: Mioli Music, was a huge success. With your help, we raised more than 2x the goal ending the month-long fundraiser just over $5,000! With that money, Mioli could breathe a sigh of relief and cover a portion of their ongoing operating expenses.
So get ready to rally for our next campaign, Tech For Techno: Bay Area Sound Systems! Also known as B.A.S.S, this team of sound fanatics has powered the dance floors for thousands of techno friends over the last three years. You likely heard their sound systems on the rooftops of San Francisco with All Day/All Night & Pink Mammoth, at the Halcyon, SET, and G-Code boat parties, or in the late-night underground with Mioli Music and It's a Journey.
Covid-19 Silences Bay Area Nightlife
For decades San Francisco has been home to a vibrant and talented nightlife community hosting dozens of events that bring thousands of people together every weekend. There's never been a shortage of places to go for a night of techno, house, or any other electronic music genre.
In the spring of 2020, all of this changed when COVID-19 shut down the Bay Area nightlife industry. Suddenly, everyone that worked together to bring you all this incredible music found themselves without work.
When the Stay At Home Order lifted, our community scrambled to create socially distanced outdoor events following safety guidelines set forth by local and national guidance. We came together and danced once again. Then winter came, and along with it, a spike in COVID-19 cases ushered in a second, even more restrictive lockdown that forced the live music scene into silence.
Although the city of San Francisco acknowledged this pain by making relief funds available for venues, it's simply not enough. It does not help pay rent, health insurance, or food for those who work within the industry. So it's up to us to come together and stand behind our creators to ensure we have a scene to return to post-COVID-19 shutdown.

How The Funds Will Be Used
Bay Area Sound Systems, also known as B.A.S.S, founded by Atlas Kan, will use the funds to help purchase new smaller-scale Funktion One equipment for the upcoming summer months. The new equipment will enable the team to book more intimate shows within the realms of current California capacity limitations while still providing a high-end audio experience.
Will you join me in helping bridge B.A.S.S until they can safely return to business as usual - providing quality sound for large-scale events that keep you dancing?
There are multiple ways you can support:
- Donate via this GoFundMe page
- Amplify our message by sharing this campaign with your friends
The initial target of $2,000 will help reduce the loss of thousands of dollars in earnings after months of canceled or postponed shows because of COVID-19. If we exceed this initial target, all additional funds will continue to go directly to B.A.S.S to ease the pain of significant financial disruption.

A Personal Note From Atlas Kan, owner of B.A.S.S
First off we want to say, Thank you to all of our continued supporters and audio lovers!
We are beyond elated & honored to be considered for Tech for Techno.
For the last three years, B.A.S.S has worked with the Bay's most talented promoters, venues, and event producers to help bring you the best curated entertainment experiences in San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area. It means the world to us to be your trusted & go-to audio rental company in the Bay Area dance community. And while we made it through 2020, it was a challenging year; we barely survived.
B.A.S.S has not deployed a single large-format sound system since the first COVID shutdown in March 2020. The lack of these larger bookings has been a problem for us because it was our primary source of income. Without these bookings, we needed to find other creative and viable ways to keep our staff paid and the lights on at the shop/office that didn’t involve liquidating any more of our inventory and stock on hand.
So this year, we are doubling down and focusing on bookings for smaller summer gatherings like B.B.Q.s, beach days, penthouse, pool, park, & rooftop parties. Eventually, you will see us back to the large-scale productions, but right now - we need your help to purchase new smaller-scale Funktion One equipment that will allow us to bring that sweet purple sound to smaller and intimate events as the summer opens up within the tight and restrictive California guidelines.
Big or small, our team puts our heart and soul into everything we do. You give us purpose and are the reason we keep pushing on each day. Thanks for your help toward reaching our summer goals, it is gratefully cherished & appreciated.
See you on the dance floor!

About Tech For Techno
Over the 2020 holidays, I reflected on my purpose as a product designer in the world's largest tech market and as a D.J. and techno friend. I thought about how grateful I am to everyone in this scene for creating space for our friends to dance, D.J., produce, and keep us connected every week. I realized there must be others in tech who feel the way I do, so here we are.
Tech For Techno holds space for the transformative power of art and music. We believe electronic music culture creates inspiring personal experiences and offers meaningful ways to engage with each other and the world around us. We imagine a vibrant San Francisco nightlife where the tech industry's prosperity and creative solutions to support communities go hand-in-hand.
In these challenging times, the tech industry, more than any other, is in a unique position to help support our creators that are vital to keeping the electronic music scene vibrant and alive.
Thank you and let's techno together,
Shane Fontane
