My name is Ana, I have a disability called SMA or Spinal Muscular Atrophy. SMA is a genetic disorder that starts in the central nervous system (CNS) and all the muscles in the body. Due to the degenerative nature of the disease, people with SMA will experience a decline in muscle strength over time. Though, the rate and severity can vary among individuals. Growing up with SMA or any form of Muscular Dystrophy you learn early on that you don't have the luxury of time. I have lived a very blessed life, not to say that growing up with a disability is easy but you learn to cope with it and enjoy life. I have accomplished many things in my life, but to be honest with you I didn't think I would. I've always had to fight twice as hard for everything I have; this in turn has made me appreciate everything more. I am now in a new stage in life where there's a medication to keep my SMA stable (something not expected). I am a full-time employee and mother of a wonderful little human. She is my motivation to continue fighting and set an example for her; that everything worth fighting for isn't easily obtained.

My dream is to be able to drive a vehicle on my own. I currently depend on someone to assist me with everything and I'm grateful to have my mom and family for that. But when it comes to driving me around that is not always the case. I have to schedule access as a form of transportation or get a Lyft or Uber which can be very expensive. Public transportation is available but not always reliable. I've experienced getting left behind for the next bus because two wheelchairs are on board or because people refuse to give up their seats. Through research and the evaluation done at Driving Systems Inc. I learned that the equipment required for me to drive is available however very expensive. Through this gofundme I'm asking for a donation to buy the equipment out of pocket. Any amount you can give is greatly appreciated. Many of you who know me personally know that I'm not one to ask for help but this is something extremely important to me. If find it in your heart to donate please do so. Mi nombre es Ana, tengo una discapacidad llamada AME o Atrofia Muscular Espinal. La AME es un trastorno genético que comienza en el sistema nervioso central (SNC) y en todos los músculos del cuerpo. Debido a la naturaleza degenerativa de la enfermedad, las personas con AME experimentarán una disminución de la fuerza muscular con el tiempo. Sin embargo, la tasa y la gravedad pueden variar entre los individuos. Al crecer con AME o cualquier forma de distrofia muscular, uno aprende desde el principio que no tiene el lujo del tiempo. He vivido una vida muy bendecida, no quiere decir que crecer con una discapacidad sea fácil, pero aprendes a sobrellevarlo y disfrutar de la vida. He logrado muchas cosas en mi vida, pero para ser honesto contigo, no pensé que lo haría. Siempre he tenido que luchar el doble por todo lo que tengo; esto a su vez me ha hecho apreciar todo más. Ahora estoy en una nueva etapa de la vida en la que hay un medicamento para mantener estable mi AME (algo inesperado). Soy una empleada de tiempo completo y madre de un pequeño ser humano maravilloso. Ella es mi motivación para seguir luchando y ser un ejemplo para ella; que todo por lo que vale la pena luchar no se obtiene fácilmente.

Mi sueño es poder conducir un vehículo por mi cuenta. Actualmente dependo de alguien que me ayude en todo y estoy agradecida de tener a mi mamá y mi familia para eso. Pero cuando se trata de conducirme, ese no es siempre el caso. Tengo que programar el acceso como una forma de transporte u obtener un Lyft o Uber, que pueden ser muy costosos. El transporte público está disponible pero no siempre es confiable. He experimentado que me dejen atrás para el próximo autobús porque hay dos sillas de ruedas a bordo o porque la gente se niega a ceder sus asientos. A través de la investigación y la evaluación realizada en Driving Systems Inc., aprendí que el equipo que necesito para conducir está disponible, aunque sea muy costoso.
