This is written by a friend of Lisa, after hearing just the tip of the iceberg I wanted to help them create a GoFundMe. Most of these are immediate injuries or diagnoses, but Cedrik and Lisa have been trying to stay strong and not ask for help since the beginning. Cedrik is a Veteran, and although his combat PTSD has not surfaced yet, his frustration and depression is worstening.
It all started with a simple ankle injury that led to surgery and being out of work from October 2019 until February of 2020. During this surgery, he aspirated and just one week after surgery he had uncontrolled high blood pressure and formed a deep vein thrombosis. Even after recovering Cedrik was having severe ankle swelling and feeling sick to the point of passing out, one time his body temperature had raised to 106.1. He was then diagnosed with hypertension and placed on blood pressure medications, although his blood pressure never regulated. He started to have muscle cramps, weakness, and loss of sensation in his hands and feet. Finally, he was placed on FMLA by his primary doctor and was saw a neurologist. After multiple tests, MRIs, and bloodwork Cedrik was said to have polyneuropathy, myelopathy, and upper motor neuron syndrome. Since June of 2020 Cedrik has been out of work and is in the process of being placed on disability. During his most recent appointment, he was referred to the Mayo Clinic as his two neurologists can't truly diagnose him or treat him adequately. They have ruled out common neurological diseases and are now dealing with rare ones like ALS, PLS, SMS, and HPS.
Despite the assortment of medications he takes, his pain and weakness are completely impairing him. Lisa has to care for him while he suffers severe pain, difficulty swallowing and chewing, slurred speech, vertigo, blurred vision, and temporary paralysis. He can no longer enjoy the activities and hobbies he once enjoyed. Leading to anger, frustration, anxiety, and depression.
At this time they are surviving off of one income, less than half of what their income was when Cedrik was working ($1,800 a month, compared to $5,000 previously). They haven't been able to pay rent since November of 2020. Insurance is denying claims, and credit cards have been maxed out.
This leaves nothing to get to the Mayo Clinic, four and a half hours away. They will likely need a hotel during their stay there, as well as a rental car since their car will not be able to make it. She will need to stay with him as his designated caregiver, and will not be able to work. Besides their 18yo son Jordan, they do not have any family in the USA. They have gotten this far from a lot of help from friends like you that are reading this.
We are hoping to finally allow the Merlet's to take a breath, get their head above water, and let their support team kick in. This money will help them catch up on bills, buy groceries, and support their trip to Mayo. Please help however much you can, $5 is more than a gallon of gas to get them there.
