Mandy's Africa Yoga Project Mission
Donation protected
I have always dreamed of being a part of a service organization. After high school I so badly wanted to join Outward Bound, an organization similar to the Peace Corps. Out of fear of the unknown and the nagging thought that I really "should" just go to college, I didn't go. I often think about what my life would be like now had I gone and I've often regretted my decision. Now I have another chance!
I am excited and honored to join the Africa Yoga Project this November! I will be a part of a team venturing into Nairobi, Kenya to help native Kenyans create a business through the practice of yoga. Not only does this training help to create self-sufficiency, employment and empowerment amongst the Kenyan teaching community, it also gives them a life-long skill to provide for themselves and their families.
I've donated to so many charities throughout the years and I've never once been shown the direct results of what my money did. This time is different for me as the volunteer and for you as a donor! I will be working directly with individuals who will be learning these skills! I'll get to know them and possibly their families too! I'll be immersed in their community and their culture. I will actually become friends with the people who's life I will be changing. What an amazing opportunity!
AYP was created in 2007 to train youth and build the wellness industry so that previously un- or under-employed youth from marginalized communities earn a self-sustaining income as community leaders who have the ability to build healthy, wellness-promoting communities. AYP has trained more than 200 yoga teachers! Now, our team has been tasked with teaching these outstanding individuals how to build a business around their practice. They have never gone to a school, much less been trained in the ins and outs of running a business. Our team is going to create a 'Business in a Box' for them that will give them step by step instructions on how to utilize the skills they've been given to create a true business for them. These skills will change their lives!
Your donations will go directly to changing lives of individuals born and raised in the slums of Nairobi. Your donations will help them create a new life for themselves, their families, and their future families.
$5 Buys a yoga mat for an outreach location
$20 Sponsors a yoga class for a group of marginalized youth
$125 Sponsors a monthly stipend for one teacher to attend the AYP academy
$330 feeds 300 people at our community class
$500 provides clean drinking water at the Shine Center for 1 full year
$2500 trains a marginalized youth to be a yoga teacher
Your donations will go directly to the Africa Yoga Project and the funding of our trip. I will be on a team of 7 people, teaching anywhere between 50-150 people! We leave on November 3, 2016.
As a donor, if you'd like to be updated through photos of my journey, I would love to share that with you.
If you are not able to give financially at this time, there are other ways to support our campaign- share my fundraising page with friends, family, coworkers, your church and community organizations; donate a good or service you excel at to my silent auction; pass my information along to your employer to see if they would like to be involved.
Every little bit helps! Thanks so much for taking the time to read about my incredible journey I am about to embark upon. Thank you for anything you can give to help me change lives!
