It’s with a heavy heart that I sit here tonight and share the devastating news my family received last Friday. Our beloved mother, Elizabeth Velez has been diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD).CJD is a rapidly progressive, invariably fatal neurodegenerative disorder believed to be caused by an abnormal isoform of a cellular glycoprotein known as the prion protein.

We are heart broken, confused, upset, and emotional many days unable to comprehend what has occurred to my mother in such a rapid manner. My mother Elizabeth is loving, caring, selfless, God fearing, compassionate, and one of the hardest working individuals we know. Now she must face this terrible disease, which will ultimately take her life as there is not treatment for CJD.
The last two months have been very difficult on our family, especially watching the doctors struggle pin pointing what was causing my mother to debilitate. Having to explain this to family and friends is difficult and my heart truly is shattered in a million pieces. Elizabeth has my wonderful father Jose who has been by her side every second of every day. She has myself, and my siblings Vanessa and Joey that support her, love her, and give her whatever her heart desires. My mother is loved by her family, 11 sisters and 5 brothers that share in our heart break over this news. I find it very difficult to type this up and share my heart break with the world but I understand it is important for all who have ever met Elizabeth to know her current state of health. I will try my best to update this page with any news or health changes that might occur in the near future. I encourage my friends and family to share a story about my mother that might make us smile because there have been so many tears lately.
I personally want to talk about my mother in this section because I need to vent and share with the world how much I love her. As a child I grew up so incredibly loved by my parents but a mother’s love is unexplainable. We played games, we laughed, we learned how to treat people with respect, we learned about God, we didn’t have much but we had LOVE. My mother opened up her homes countless times to family and friends who were in need and did so without question. My mother’s heart is so big she would give you the last piece of toast in our home even if she had not eaten dinner herself. She would give you the shirt off her back if she knew you needed it and would never ask for it back. I played soccer my entire life and one thing was for sure, I would always look up into the stands and see her beautiful face cheering me on. She was my number one fan and I tell her every day I’m her number one fan. She cheered for me, encouraged me, and lifted my sprites when I was down, but always let me know how special I was. That has carried over into all aspects of my life, my mother has always been there for me. Especially when I became a mother myself, I couldn’t ask for a better person to be with me with all the challenges I would face. She has been the best and most important role model in my life, and I’m not sure where I would be today if not for her love and support. At this moment in my life I can only thank God for giving me the opportunity to share her with my children, they have been able to love her and be loved by her. I can go on and on about my mom and how she just loved everyone in her life. I will share more stories about her in the upcoming updates and hope to read how she has impacted your life.
As you can imagine, my parents Elizabeth and Jose are facing a daunting pile of medical bills, costs for medical equipment needed that is not covered by insurance and all of the other costs associated with her care and support. Besides prayers and gifts of food, so many people have asked how they can help. So we decided to set up this fund to give you - our family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances and anyone else - a way to help my mother.
Please feel free to give whatever you feel will help, and you always can come back to make another contribution. You can just click on the donate button and use a credit or debit card. We thank each and every one of you in advance and hope to write individual thanks. Rest assured that all proceeds will go directly to Elizabeth and Jose to help them with this massive challenge. If you have any questions please email me, Gladys at [email redacted]. We are so grateful for the many prayers and expressions of support.
Our great hope is to keep my mother happy, comfortable, and loved during the next phase of this debilitating disease.
Thank you for taking time to read this and for helping Elizabeth with your love, prayers, personal help and contribution to help us defray the costs of her care and relieve my parents of as much worry as possible – so they can focus on each other.
