Doug Whitaker’s Fight Against Cancer

Donation protected
My dear friends Darlene and Doug got news in Dec that Doug had cancer. The “c” word no one ever wants to hear. Cancer Sucks!

On Dec 29th Doug was admitted to the hospital with kidney failure and days later was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma.

cancer of plasma cells. The plasma cells are a type of white blood cell in the bone marrow. With this condition, a group of plasma cells becomes cancerous and multiplies. The disease can damage the bones, immune system, kidneys, and red blood cell count.

Doug spent 16 days in the Oncology ICU at Riverside. He’s on dialysis 3 times a week and is undergoing chemotherapy until May. His doctor feels he is a good candidate for a bone marrow transplant this summer and remains optimistic.

Doug has always been very active coaching athletes and owning a cross fit gym. The doctor feels his athletic strength has helped him in his fight.  a hard worker and hands on dad to Jesse and Gia. He was 1 month a away from having full time benefits with UPS when he got sick. Doug has a tremendous fighting spirit and is praying for a full recovery. He continues to stay in good spirits and is fighting for his 15 year old son Jesse, his daughter Gia who is 7 (and a Daddy’s girl ❤️) and his lovely Darlene who cares for him patiently and tirelessly everyday and night.

One of  Doug’s dreams was to open a CrossFit gym and in 2017 Darlene and Doug together made this dream a reality and opened CrossFit Almighty in Newport News. They are both devastated that they had to close CrossFit Almighty, but at this time agreed they couldn’t keep it open. Darlene is caring for Doug while home schooling Jesse and Gia to keep them away from additional germs and illnesses they could bring home. They both remain faithful that their dream of owning a CrossFit will happen again one day when this is all behind them.

Doug is also a fun loving DJ! He brought so many of us the best music, tons of fun and so many laughs to our weddings, birthdays and other events. Many call him “DJ Doug”! He always loved having a good time and seeing other people have fun as well.

Those who love and care about Doug and his family often ask how they can help. Your generosity will support Doug’s current medical bills as well as his transplant and months of hospitalized treatment after. It is a great possibility his transplant will take place out of town and they will inquire additional living expensive where he and Darlene will have to stay for months. If you are unable to give financial please pray and share his story so others can pray and support them too. Thank you for all your prayers, love, text, calls and meals you have showered them with!
