Garret's Pancreas Transplant
Donation protected
Our names are Garret and Shaylyn Troop. We live in Central Wisconsin, and Garret has been given the oppurtunity of a life time. The oppurtunity to CURE his Diabetes and hopefully improve his gastroparesis.
At age 5, Garret was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. He spent 45 days in a coma, had three strokes, suffered from delayed learning, and paralization due to the strokes. At 12 he suffered his first DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) after his initial hospitalization at 5.
In his mid-twenties, he noticed something else going on. He was diagnosed with Diabetic Gastroparesis. A digestive disorder, brought on by complications from diabetes. He's unable to digest food, and is often sick for days at a time.
With three kids to care for, Garret wants to have the best life possible.
After moving to Wisconsin, he started seeing a new Endocrinologist. She is ultimately his life saver. She spent over an hour on the phone with a colleague at UW Madison, telling them that Garret is a possible candidate for the transplant. He no longer feels the symptoms of his low's until he's dangerously low. With a new pancreas, this will no longer be a problem. He will no longer be a diabetic.
We are raising money to help with transportation costs to UW Madison. We live roughly 2 hours away from the hospital. I hope to be by my husband's side as much as possible. However, I still have to work. I will need to take Garret to the hospital upon receiving the phone call for the surgery initally. He will be in the hospital up to 10 days if everything goes correctly. I will then need to travel back and forth in order to work, and help my husband. While I am home, I will be able to have the kids with me. While in Madison, they will be staying in temporary housing for children with a parent going through the transplant process.
Funds are not only needed for travel expenses (gas, food, lodging for myself) but also to help make up for the loss of income while I am helping my husband. I will need to undergo quick training in order to take care of him once he is home.
Garret got the news today (June 22, 2016) that he is officially on the transplant list. We can get the phone call at anytime telling us we have 4-6 hours to get to Madison for the surgery.
We are thankful for all of our friends and family that are willing and able to help. This is truly an amazing chance for Garret. The oppurtunity for a healthier life. Something he hasn't been for the past 29 years. Not only will this cure his diabetes, but it will also help to improve his Gastroparesis, and he can try and live a more normal life.
Thank you in advance if you are able to help. It truly means so much to our family.
