On Thursday, July 30th, my family received some devastating news. After what we thought would be a routine trip to urgent care, my nephew Austin Anderson, was sent to the ER due to an abnormal chest x-ray. At the ER, he had a CAT scan done and they found that he had cancer that had spread through many parts of his abdomen and lungs.
Austin has always brought smiles to the faces of his family and friends. He goes by many nicknames, including Austin-to-Boston, Brotherman, and Uncle Bubba to his niece and nephews. For any of you who have had the opportunity to play cornhole with him, you know he’s unbeatable. And the guitar? Forget it! He’ll knock your socks off but he’d never admit that, he’s too humble. He has demonstrated such bravery throughout this whole ordeal. He has been a source of strength to his family even though he is the one who is sick.
Austin is well-known here in his hometown of Millbury. He attended Millbury High School where he played on the baseball team for many years and graduated in 2016. He just recently moved back to Massachusetts from Oregon and was going to start a new job when he received his diagnosis. Our hope is that during this time Austin does not have to worry about anything besides getting better.
Looking ahead, we know that Austin will require many months of treatment. He is a young man, 22 years old, and we are confident that he will beat this. He will need the support of his family and friends throughout his journey. His mother arrived recently from Oregon where she resides and she will stay here with him, taking care of him as long as he needs her. Austin will need to be isolated from loved ones and friends while receiving treatment. His mom, Tiffany, will need to rent an apartment where they both can stay while he undergoes chemotherapy. He began his first round of chemotherapy on Tuesday and will remain in the hospital this week before transferring to outpatient chemo. He will require approximately 6 months of treatment.
Any support, whether it be emotional or financial, that you are able to give, is greatly appreciated. Austin has a huge support system and I am sure that we will all band together to make this difficult time somewhat less burdensome for him.
