Mission Get Gail Home

Donation protected
Hi everyone! My name is Marielle Bertram and I am a physical therapy student at Misericordia University.  Six years ago I met Mallory Loughman my first day of class as a freshmen.  Over the years she became part of my family.  That being said, family looks out for one another when they are in need.  Right now, my family needs help.

On May 28th, 2016 Mallory's mother Gail woke up at 6:15 AM not being able to move the right side of her body and not being able to speak correctly.  By 7:20 she was life flighted to Bethlehem hospital in PA after she was diagnosed with having a major stroke.  She was administered a tPA clot buster that was unsuccessful.  Doctors attempted to remove the clot around 1:00 PM but were unsuccessful at removing the entire clot.  Gail was life flighted again to Jefferson Hospital in Philly where doctors performed invasive brain surgery to remove the entire clot at 6:00PM.

When the sedation wore off, Gail was left without any motor function in her body.  She sustained a stroke in the basilar artery of the brain which provides blood supply to the pons.  A stroke in this area of the brain can cause Locked In Syndrome.  A person can see, hear, and think, but they are unable to move their body or communicate with their voice.  They are essentially locked inside of their own body.  Gail was put on a ventilator and a trach.  She is now able to communicate with her eyes and has regained the ability to shake her head 'yes' and 'no.'

Gail's daughter Mallory is on a clinical for school and her husband has to return to work soon.  They drive two hours to Philly everyday to spend a few hours with her before returning home to go to work and clinical.  Gail will be moved to a nursing home within the next three weeks since the family does not have the funds to bring her home where she belongs.  Their house needs a ramp for a wheelchair to bring Gail inside, the living room needs remodeled to accomodate a hospital bed, and round the clock nursing aids would need to be hired.  Gail is a wonderful woman, a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a dedicated dog mom.  She deserves to be able to recover in her own home surrounded by her loving family and friends and her best friend Kobi the German Sheperd.

This family has welcomed me into their home and their lives with open arms.  They have done nothing but help others in the Tamaqua community, the Misericordia community, and in their local church.  Let's show them the same kindness by raising funds to get Gail home!  Any donation, big or small will make a world of difference for the Loughman family. and will get us one step closer to bringing Gail home.
