Carlmont STARS Garden

My name is Sean Stevenot. I am a 17 year old Life Scout in San Mateo's Troop 27 who is looking to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. One of the requirements of this rank is to organize a service project that will leave a lasting effect on my community. To fulfill this requirement, I contacted the administration of my old high school, Carlmont, to see if they were in need of any assistance. They redirected me to Richard Weigelt, one of the teachers in Carlmont's STARS program.

Carlmont STARS  is a Special Education program designed to give students additional support in order to access the comprehensive academic campus. The program provides both a safe and educational space for these students to learn.

One of the problems that teachers like Mr. Weigelt face is the concern of eating. Many of the students in the program are unable to eat in the school cafeteria, and must stay in the room under the supervision of their teachers. As a result, they maintained a garden outside their classroom where they would grow fruits and vegetables to use in making the students' lunches. This method was successful; however, it was recently torn down for expansion of the school.

Since the demolition of the garden, the teachers of this program have been forced to exclusively buy food for lunches from stores, making something as simple as lunch a costly worry for the program. As a result, the students are in need of a new garden to help keep the program afloat.

I have accepted the task of rebuilding the garden in a new spot that will be safe from demolition. I have met with Mr. Weigelt to discuss the layout and design of the garden, and have come up with a model:

As I put together this model, I realized how costly this endeavor will be. The garden requires not only planter boxes for the food, but a tall wire fence to keep out animals, fence posts, dirt, gravel, weed blocker, and tools to use in its construction.

By learning more about the STARS program, I have understood how important this garden will be for the students. The teachers in this program stress over putting food on the table and providing a  safe place to eat. The construction of this garden will leave a lasting impact on many of the school's most vulnerable students. However, good intentions can only go so far. This project will fail without donations to support it.

The construction is planned to take place on the weekend of 8/6 due to time constraints. I can organize volunteers to help with this venture, but that is only half of the dilemna. There is only so much I can pay out of pocket for this; I need your help to pay for materials that will be utilized in making this dream a reality. Both I and the members of the STARS program will be eternally grateful for any amount you can donate. Every time these students eat freshly grown food from this garden, they will be reminded of your kindness and generosity. Thank you for your time, and we look forward to your help.
