Was reminded these past several days (beginning Thursday), though a helpful tag line for Morton Salt and entertaining as a song for 50 Cent, the real meaning for “when it rains it pours” is most known for describing an unfortunate event tied closely to other misfortunes.
On Thursday afternoon of June 16th . . .
I left my backpack unattended and it was picked up OR stolen by someone. In the backpack (which was a gift from my colleagues in the Dallas Office of Alvarez & Marsal) was my laptop, iPhone, and a number of important documents organized for easy retrieval. Maybe too easy for retrieval. This initially resulted in a crisis of epic proportions, but soon subsided into the steps I began taking (it would be dishonest to say these steps were patiently taken) to return some order from this chaos.
In the midst of resolving issues related to this, it has become time to address the issue raised in my status update of June 7. Specifically, I am not earning enough money with my current Uber driving approach and effort to fully cover work and living expenses. My goal, when I began Ubering, was for this effort to “re-start my work life”. I felt this was needed after being out of income-generating work for 18 months.
I currently make enough with my current approach, to cover the costs of the vehicle (including insurance), gas and phone / data each week. Other miscellaneous expenses are typically covered by my Uber income. This leaves a weekly shortfall of $310.99 for rent and groceries - $60 for food and rent of $254.99. This means once again asking my friends, former students, colleagues and class mates for $3500 assistance ($3464.99 to be exact) to sustain me through these next few months. You may use this GoFundMe link or contact me with other arrangements, if you choose and are capable to assist.
Even with this reality, it is my desire to continue with these transitional efforts, returning to work full-time the first week of September. I will continue to Uber, improve my emotional and physical well-being and seek my next job / career opportunity. I did not intend for this work to be permanent but did not estimate it could possibly be this short in duration (9 weeks; first trip was April 27).
I am car payment behind and do not want to lose my Uber experience. I really need your help. Please do not hesitate to contact me via email or cell if you have questions, concerns, ideas or feedback. And I appreciate notes, emails and responses - these support and sustains continually.
I close, with a statement I have made before, which seems to never get old for me to repeat: "If the character of a person is through the friends he / she has, I am a most fortunate person." Fortunate that when then rain is pouring, I continue to find shelter.
