Danny Ball is best known as a hard working husband, father, grandfather and friend. He spends most of his free time at home with his wife, Judy, working on their ever growing garden. Friends who know him would be quick to tell you he is a genuinely nice person that keeps to himself but can hold a lengthy conversation if approached. Danny is a volunteer with the Sinnemahoning Fire Department and EMS. He is also a member of the Cameron County Planning Commission. He has been a member of the community his entire life.
Danny was recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer and will begin a tough battle through chemotherapy and radiation followed by surgery, with potentially more chemo after. Due to the nature of this type of cancer, it is not typically detected until it has progressed into a later stage and in Danny’s case, it has spread to a number of lymph nodes surrounding his esophagus. Luckily, after numerous tests and scans, it appears that it has not metastasized.
He will have 4-5 weeks of initial treatment before surgery to try to shrink the main tumor. After completion, he will undergo a roughly 10 hour surgery to remove the cancerous section of his esophagus and reconstruct the area using the upper portion of his stomach. If all goes well, this may completely remove the cancer, but he could potentially need chemotherapy to follow up the surgery.
After meeting and discussing this game plan with doctors at UPMC’s Hillman Cancer Center, the family has decided to complete all treatment at the center in Pittsburgh. Although most of the treatment is outpatient, Danny and Judy will be spending most of the time in Pittsburgh as traveling back and forth every day for radiation would be a 6 hour trip.
We are starting this fundraising campaign to assist in offsetting some of the costs of staying in Pittsburgh for duration of treatment and following care that will be needed after Danny’s surgery. Neither Danny nor Judy would ever look for a handout but we are here asking for the help they won’t. As you can imagine, this road to recovery will be very expensive as Danny and his family will be responsible for medical bills, rehab bills, home health care, and more. We all want to help make sure he receives the very best care and has every possible resource available to him to help them focus on recovery. The best way we can do that right now is to help alleviate the financial stress this has put on him and his family.
