Dear friends and family,
This summer I will be taking a trip to the small community of Chacraseca in Nicaragua. My dad is taking 17 medical students to help, and there were a few spots on the team for non-medical personnel.
Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Western hemisphere. The rate of unemployment in rural areas is estimated to be as high as 95%. Chacraseca is a 59 square mile farming community just east of Leon, near the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua. Most of the 9200 residents are subsistence farmers, averaging less than $2 per day per family in income.
The clinic where we'll be working began in 2013 when DOCARE partnered with MINSA (Nicaragua Ministry of Health) and JustHope, Inc. to bring medical services to this under-privileged community.
The clinic has four exam rooms, a pharmacy, and a lab. The clinic staff is made up of volunteers from the community, a Nicaraguan doctor, and a part-time dentist. I will be assisting with distributing glasses, restocking the pharmacy, and helping with medical supplies.

I hope to receive help with funding to cover my transportation to and from Nicaragua and the cost of my room and board.
I am so grateful for this opportunity to help others in need. Not only am I interested in learning more about the Spanish language and culture, I also hope to be a trauma surgeon someday!
Thank you and muchas gracias,
Emma Frothingham
