I am the daughter of John Oberg who has been left with a huge hole in her heart at the passing of her father, but also a huge financial burden because his death was so sudden and therefore no time to make arrangements for burial costs. My father was not a wealthy man by any means, and what little that remains is not enough to ensure that my mother will not have the worry of how the bills will be paid, let alone the funeral costs. My siblings and I are scrambling to collect the funds and hope that once you know who he was that you would be moved with compassion to make a donation.
My father John Oberg was the most kind, loving, and generous person. He always did everything he could to provide for his family, such as work extra hours at two jobs just to make ends meet. He was a man of faith and believed that by serving others he was the best example of God's love. He was dedicated to his family and his church. He was a father figure to many kids who were without guidance in their lives and did his best to show them the importance of being responsible and accountable for their actions. He was a man of few words, but he always made sure my siblings, mother, and I felt his love through his actions. He willingly took on the job of being my mother's caregiver when she was diagnosed with diabetes in December of 2012 and served her with joy until he could no longer physically handle it. He gave all that he had so she would be supported.
He was full of humility and never wanted the focus to be on him. He would always say that his greatest gift was being a husband, father, and grandfather because of the opportunities to show his love without wanting anything in return.
His life took a drastic turn when he was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic lung cancer on December 24, 2015. He began to lose weight at an alarming rate despite th e fact he was eating. Aside from that, he was in agony from the pain as the cancer began to spread to the bones of the spine, which made sitting for too long, walking, and even standing an arduous task that left him out of breath. Despite all these setbacks, my father tried to stay positive and believed he would beat the cancer through all the treatments he was enduring. Actually we all did as we were praying day and night for his divine healing. His final blow came on Monday June 13 when he was taken to the ER due to severe dehydration and as he was there began to experience shortness of breath, something he had never had before or at least never told any of us about. He was admitted to the hospital and the very next day was moved to intensive care as his heart rate was extremely high and his breathing very rapid. He fought it off as much as he could, but his body would not respond to any treatments by Thursday June 16 and then the next day Friday the 17th he took his last breath and his heart gave out.
We have his funeral set for Saturday June 25th as he wanted to be buried not cremated and we are doing everything we can to honor his last wishes. We are asking for the money by this Thursday June 23rd and are just hoping that enough people will help us to give the greatest man we ever knew his final send off. He was taken from us too soon as he was just 68 years old and the shock of his passing feels surreal. Please help us honor him. We would be eternally grateful to all of you for answering a need that we ourselves cannot fill alone.
