My daughter, Marianne, is about to turn four years old and has been wearing hearing aids for almost a year. She has hearing loss in both ears that ranges from mild to severe in her left ear and mild to profound in her right ear.
It is a common misconception that hearing aids are the ultimate solution to hearing loss. Even with her hearing aids Marianne can't hear perfectly. Her degree of understanding depends on whether or not she can see a person's face when they are talking to her, and on how much background noise there is. Marianne's cognitive development is exactly where it should be for a child of her age but she struggles with directions and understanding group activities simply because it is hard for her to understand what it is going on. Due to this Marianne can fall behind developmentally and not reach her full potential. As her mother, that is not something I'm willing to sit back and watch happen.
Phonak's Roger system is designed to bridge this gap for children. It is an FM system with two basic parts; a microphone and a receiver. The microphone clips onto a person's shirt and the receiver attaches to her hearing aids. The microphone, in Marianne's life, will be worn by me (her mother) at home so she can better understand my direction, her dance teacher, her speech therapist, and her pre-school teacher. The voice of the person wearing the microphone will be transmitted directly into Marianne's ear making it significantly easier for her to understand what is going on, especially in cases of increased background noise. The Roger microphone can also be hooked up the television and other audio devices to help eliminate background noise and improve her understanding.
Marianne's ability to hear and understand language is crucial to her speech development. She is behind with speech and every day counts when it comes to catching up on language. Being able to better understand what people are saying with the Roger system will help Marianne pick up on sounds and form words quicker and more efficiently.
