Ami's Medical Expenses

I know many of you have followed the saga of my ankle on Facebook so please bare with me while I update the rest. In April of 2015 I stepped on a pen at work and rolled my ankle, causing a significant injury. I guess it is true, the pen is mightier than the sword! I continued to work until June when my Doctor advised I needed surgery, but also needed to reduce the amount of swelling in my ankle before surgery. At this point Workers Comp was paying my medical bills and lost pay. I was scheduled for surgery the third week in July on a Wednesday, Three days prior to the surgery, I was advised that my employer’s Worker Comp Insurance would no longer cover my claim pending further investigation. Subsequently, they have decided to fight my claim as a preexisting condition. Since I was no longer receiving pay from my employer's workers comp insurance, I applied for the disability insurance offered by my employer. Ironically, my claim was denied because my employer reported that my injury was a result of a workplace accident..... go figure. Thankfully, I have private health insurance that has allowed me to get the medical care I need and had some money saved that has carried me over the past year. As for my ankle, I have had a rather complicated course. I have at present had three surgeries and anticipate another one and maybe a second. I have spent over a month in the hospital during the course of this injury. Developed a severe infection that required A PICC line and 10 weeks of antibiotics. And I have developed a rather rare condition known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, or CRPS. The CRPS causes my foot to turn blue and cold one moment to red and hot the next, it causes severe spasms and extreme pain. My out of pocket expenses to date are over $10.000, which hopefully will be covered once my case is settled. In the mean time my reserves are gone and the surgeon who treats the CRPS takes no insurance. My insurance will cover the doctor and surgery as an out of network provider, but I have to first pay the out of network deductible and out of pocket max before his expenses will be covered. Any amount you can contribute will help and be greatly appreciated.
