Quintin's Brain Injury Fund

Check Out our latest update!  Quintin continues to beat the odds and is still progressing.  It takes time and dedication to re-build your brain and thanks to your help, we're doing it day by day, neuron by neuron.

Here's Quintin's story...the ending still hasn't been written!   On June 5th last year another car crashed into the car Quintin was driving.  The other driver had a suspended license and  was driving an uninsured car when he  blew through a stop sign with his foot nearly to the floor.  Quintin didn't stand a chance.  My son, Quintin needs your help.   Quintin suffered a severe Traumatic Brain Injury and he needs so much on this road to recovery.

Having a TBI is  a life shattering event. Quintin is a responsible young man who was doing everything right--working,taking care of his fiancee, learning and experiencing life as a loving, creative, funny 21 year old young man. He is a lover of pets with two dogs, a cat, and even lizard named Pete. He is the kind of son anyone would love to call their own.

Quintin  was rushed to the Trauma Center at UMC. Precious minutes passed as he underwent surgery--an operation which removed half of his skull to allow his brain to swell in an effort to save his life.  He wasn't expected to make it.   But he fought.  He layed in a coma for a month and the Doctors at UMC sent him to a Long Term Accute Care Hospital.  There patients either decline or heal themselves.   Somehow, Quintin's body knew it needed help and an epic neurological storm sent him to St. Rose Hospital's emergency room and ICU.
Pressures inside of his brain had increased to life threatening levels.  It was decided that an internal shunt to relieve the pressure was desperately needed.   And with that, he was transferred back to UMC for the brain surgery.

It was sometime during this brief period that Quintin caught two antibiotic resistant bacteria in the Hospitals which caused him to come down with meningitis--the lining of his brain was swelling as was his brain's left ventrical.   One of the bacteria earned a reputation as a killer with a near 100% mortality rate. The infectious disease Doctors at UMC resorted to "salvage" therapy where all the stops were pulled and every effort was made to save Quintin's fading life.  Quintin  fought hard with drugs injected directly into his brain--something the Dr's had researched, but had never done.

When Quintin was sent to the Long Term Accute Care Hospital the second time, doctors at UMC approved only Pallative care, meaning they didn't think he had a chance.  One even stated for all within ear shot that it was a waste of time.   Well, Quintin is proving him wrong.

Today, Quintin has beaten the odds.   I'm writing this bedside at a general rehabilitation hospital. He is improving every single day. He is off of the ventilator and breathing completely on his own. His brain is healing through neuro plasticity. His skull is back in place.  He is able to swallow and follow commands.  He still loves music and enjoys listening to podcasts. (Radio Lab is a favorite).

Current research shows that patients with severe brain injuries continue to improve as long as treatment is available.  When the therapy and treatment stop, so does improvement.   And that is my fight and our fight for Quintin.  To assure that we can help him be his very best--and not let the uninsured DUI drivers win.

I'm reaching out to you and to everyone I know to  help share Quintin's story. I've  received a multitude of prayers and positive energy.  I appreciate every single one, but, as the Dali Lama recently said, there is a time for prayer and a time for action. It is time for action.

Because I'm spending most of my time at his bedside, and because Quintin is fighting for his life, I think it best to put his older brother, Curtis Simmons in charge of the funds.   Curtis has more knowledge of the Medical industry, he also holds a MBA.  I know he will be a good steward of the funds.   So, please take a moment and help us help Quintin. Any amount is appreciated...you climb mountains one step at a time. Big steps and little steps are appreciated.
