Hi my name is Kathy Knight, here is my story. January 2008 I was in a head on vehicle accident. At that time I spent 8 days in the hospital and had 2 major surgeries to repair a severe ankle injury. I was very lucky that that was my only injury.
After six months I was able to go back to work. But not for long!
In the eight years since the accident I have had a total of 23 surgeries all stemming from this accident.
The end result of all of this is that I am now an above the knee amputee.
Since October 2012 I have had 3 amputations,
the first was a below the knee, then they took my knee cap and the leg below the knee and then finally another 6 inches of my leg, also I have had 7 other surgeries on my stump as well as three shoulder surgeries, all in the last 3 years.
I have been unable to work since October 2012. I am just starting therapy with my new leg. This is going to be a long process but I am praying a successful one!
I am asking for help in being able to purchase a good reliable vehicle to get me to and from all my therapy and Drs. appointments. Also I am praying that I will be able to purchase a wheelchair cartopper by Braun Mobility.
This fits on top of the vehicle, works by remote control, all I need to do is get in the drivers seat, push a button and the topper opens up , lowers a hook that I slip onto the seat of my wheelchair, push the remote control button and the chain pulls the chair up which causes the chair to fold and slide right on in, 30 seconds and its done.
No more wear and tear on my shoulders(which still require more surgery),no more strain on my back and stump, no more getting my clothes wet, muddy, full of dirt or snow, putting holes in them. No more having to worry about having room in my vehicle for other people. This would be like a dream come true!
I know that anyone out there in a wheelchair knows what I am talking about if you have ever had to fight with lifting and fitting a chair in the backseat then shutting the door and hopping on one leg to get in to drive.
The van I had been driving has an exhaust leak which has been leaking carbon dioxide into my van each time I drove it.
After going to the ER from not feeling well(due to the exhaust leak) I have since been driving with the windows down, also along with a gas line leak and a power steering leak all of which was bad enough until last Thursday when the starter decided it was done which has now left me vehicleless.
I can not put into words how eternally grateful I would be for any support you may be able to give me to help me reach this goal!
