Dear friends, an update on João's Health . On a routine check up in São Paulo (MRI) unfortunately it showed that the tumor has appeared now in the spinal cord. João' parents (Janaína and Renato) were on Monday with an American doctor who coincidentally was in Brazil and he drew up a re-treatment plan for Joao that includes new hard core chemotherapy sessions initially. We do not know how many cycles it will be (from 3 to 5) because it will depend on the results of the MRI's that will be done after each cycle of Chemotherapy. We are hopeful that the tumor will shrink and then he will go to the USA to do a different type of radiotherapy called Proton Therapy in San Diego California, it is more precise and less aggressive to his bone marrow . After that he will do an ultra-specialized treatment with his own cells in New York. This is the only chance of him surviving as no one in the world has the same tumor, his is the first case . There is no protocol for little João and this very kind Doctor design one only for him . We do not know yet if he will do bone marrow transplant at some point in this new treatment. We are going back to São Paulo on Tuesday to re-start the treatment and go from there ... At this point we are going to ask everyone that could possibly help with any amount to raise money for the treatments that are going to be done at United States as João does not have any coverage there and the cost will be around US$ 300,000.00.
