Amy’s Cancer Treatments

On January 14, 2021, my mom, Amy, woke up in a great mood, it was her 43rd birthday and she was feeling great! At 10:34am her Endocrinologist called her and told her she had Follicular Thyroid Cancer! The diagnosis came only 2 weeks after losing her Aunt, my great Aunt to Mesothelioma. My mom is a single mother of 3 children, who has spent her life as a social worker and a human resources professional. She has volunteered with women’s shelters and countless non-profit organizations. She is an Activist and an Anti-Racist who has been honored to be considered an Ally of the BIPOC community. She’s raised me and my sister and brother to be proud of our Jewish and Black heritage. She’s educated herself and countless others on how to raise black children as a White parent. Growing up I knew that my mom would help people, she taught me that. As a teenager I had 4 friends live with us at different times because they were in abusive homes. At one point 3 friends were living with my family at once, so there were 7 of us in a 3 bedroom 1 bathroom home! My mom slept on the couch in the living room and gave me and my friends her room! She would give a stranger the shirt of her back and the food off of her table! While Thyroid cancer is 98% curable, the treatment is expensive, as with all cancers. My mom has insurance through her employer, but her deductible is $5000 and insurance pays nothing until the deductible has been met. When she met with her surgeon on 1/20/21, she was informed that while insurance pays out after the deductible is met, there are numerous other fees that will be her responsibility, co-pays, bloodwork, certain treatments not covered by insurance and some medication to name a few. She applied for financial aid, but was told she makes $4500 too much a year to qualify. Like most Americans she works 40 plus hours a week to take care of her children and still lives paycheck to paycheck. I’m 21, and she still helps me financially and I have a 15 yo sister and a 14 yo brother. She makes too much to get help, but not enough to afford her cancer treatments, including surgery. The average expense for a year of cancer treatment is between $10000 and $12000. A lifelong friend is donating $5000, which means she will still need $5000-$7000. This is a very treatable cancer and my mom is fighter in every sense of the word! She has spent her life fighting for other people, please help me fight for her! I can’t express how much your help will mean to her! She is our everything and I know she would help anyone if she could, I’ve watched her do it! No amount is too small!
