Emma endured grueling journeys of doctor visits for over a year, but no one recognized her severe illness. After her mother insisted on bloodwork after she looked like she may collapse at any minute, it was discovered she was severally anemic was admitted to the hospital ICU. She was there for three days where the diagnosis was made after a lot of testing. She also had her first blood transfusion then. Knowing she needed specialists, she was discharged and transferred to the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital (still severely sick to the point where she couldn't even walk). She was seen by a specialist at the Division Nephrology at U of M Amplatz Children's Hospital and another specialist at Division of Rheumatology. She received her second blood transfusion and a rush kidney biopsy. She was then put through a series of tests and bloodwork and procedures, testing every organ and system in her body. She then stayed in the hospital another week where she received three rounds of a heavy steroid called Methylprednisolone via IV to stop the inflammation in her body, followed by IV Rituximab a cancer medication that interferes with the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body. Rituxan is used to treat Wegener's Granulomatosis,non-Hodgkin's lymphoma or chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Both the steroid and Rituximab have severe and permanent side effect. Her medication list at this point is two pages long. She was submitted to many more tests, to test her lungs, eyes, ear-nose-throat, heart tests, x-rays of her whole body, many ultrasounds….
This medical endeavor has left them not only emotionally drained, afraid and exhausted, but financially as well. They have many more doctor visits in the future, which require travel expenses. On top of that her mom was not able to work to make any income and her bank account is drained to the point where she can’t afford to buy groceries or pay her bills, including medical bills and medicine.
Emma has gone through hell and back and was hit with a chronic non-curable illness overnight.
The money raised will be used to pay medical bills, transportation to medical appointments, any needs to make Emma’s life more comfortable and pain- free and some living expenses.
For Emma: It's so dark right now, I can't see any light around me. That's because the light is coming from you. You can't see it but everyone else can.
Thank you and God Bless.
