January 12,2021 our beautiful, sassy, bright eyed Rocki left us in physical form. She was a pure joy and a light in this world, just an inspiration to us all. As our family is heart broken and at a lost of words. Her nurses show us how much of an inspiration she was by writing this letter;
An Open Letter from the Nurses at the Bedside...
On January 12, our sweet Rocklynn "Rocki" lost her hard fought battle. A previously healthy little 6 year old, she had spent the last 326 at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital waiting for a heart and kidney transplant after acquiring parainfluenza. She was kept alive by a Berlin heart and a continuous dialysis machine, that she called her 'big green toilet'. Although these machines were awkward and heavy they never slowed down her spirit. She loved entertaining her nurses and everyone else at the hospital with her singing and dancing, spicy sense of humor and dreams of going home one day.
All of her nurses looked forward to their time caring for Rocki. We had to come up with endless amounts of things to do to keep her entertained while confined to the hospital and her machines. There were weekly dance parties, singing events and 'happy hours'. Rocki loved giving out candy from her sweet shop and serving 'Rock-tails', concoctions that she would make out of candy dissolved in juice and a multitude of other fluids. She would insist that we drink them and of course we would no matter how terrible they tasted. She loved the holidays and scolded us for not having taken down our snowflake decorations. She was ready to start decorating for Valentines Day and on her last walk around the unit she left small plastic hearts in the window sills.
Many of us would stop by Rocki's room every shift just to say hi and see what kind of fun was going on. She had many ideas and it was our job to figure out how to implement them. From making a tent and camping on the floor to tea parties, picnics and hot lemon water spa days. You had to be involved, you couldn't just watch and this could be quite challenging when you had to give upwards of 30 meds a shift to her. She was so very bright, articulate and observant. She never held back if she had something to say. The profound loss of the party in room 8 and our sweet Rocki will be felt forever.
The toll on her gracious and kind- hearted family has been huge. Her siblings missed her tremendously. Due to COVID her parents were the only ones allowed to visit and they were with Rocki at UCSF every day. We are asking for donations to help her family get back on their feet as well as the costs of laying Rocki to rest. Any donation, large or small, would help tremendously.
