My name is Ashley Marder Bowman, I am 30 years old and I have breast cancer. I never in my life thought this would happen to me. We all lead such busy lives planning out our futures and what we want for ourselves and then something like this happens and it stops everything in it tracks.
I am a self employed hairstylist and educator and over the past year had become so busy with my clients and classes that I was teaching. All of my dreams for my business that I had set out for myself were coming true.
Then about a month ago I found a lump in one of my breasts. I went to my doctor who sent me for a mammogram and it turns out that I have breast cancer.
My diagonisis is stage 1 at this point, but I am what they call "triple negative" so I will have to get a double mastectomy with reconstruction as well as do 8 rounds of chemotherapy over 16 weeks.
On top of the surgeries and chemo I now have to undergo IVF fertility treatments to harvest eggs so that after all of this is over I can one day have a family. None of the fertility treatments are covered by insurance and cost upwards of $7000.
I do luckily have insurance but my deductible is $5000. My mammogram and biopsy I did to find the breast cancer originally was $2500 out of pocket. And all of this is before my surgery and chemo cost, so who knows how much more every thing else will cost.
Because I work for myself when I am not working I am not making money and I do not have diability or any sort of sick leave coverage for time out of work.
This diagnosis had taken a toll on me mentally but I am able to keep my head up because I have such a wonderful support system behind me to keep me going. My biggest worry now is the financial piece of it all. Unfortunately medical procedures are very expensive and with me being out of work it makes it even harder.
So with all of that being said I appreciate anything you can do to help. If you can't donate then if you can share this so maybe someone else can donate to help us cover the medical costs that would be mean the world to me.
I am so moved by the support I have received already and I appreciate each and every one of you for your prayers and well wishes through this rough time. I know that I will be able to get through this and one day it will be a distance memory.
