Hi/jambo, my name is Geoffrey Kamau, and I live in Arizona with my family and work as a research nurse.
my mother has had multiple hospitalizations due to Craniopharingioma and its complications. In Dec/2015 she was supposed to have surgery to have the tumor removed, but she developed DVTs and PE. She was on blood thinners for a while and when her oxygen was okay she had shunts placed and was discharged to recover and gain strength before the main surgery. The abdomen area where the shunts drained the fluid to peritoneal area got infected and she had to go back and have the tubes externalized to drain in a fistula to allow the wound to heal.
Because of her confusion she pulled one of the shunts out and had to be admitted again. The shunts had been infected with multi drug resistant Ecoli, so was placed on antibiotics meropenem. When she was stable she had the tumor removed through a transphenoidal procedure. The surgery went well and she was doing well. Toward the end of the second week she started having fevers and there was a swelling on her head. A CT showed that the shunt she had was blocked and cultures showed there was infection of the Ecoli.
Her condition deterirated and she spent a week in the ICU intubated. All the old shunts were removed and had an external drain while on meropenen.
My mother has the national government insurance, but the insurance cover less that 1% to private hospitals. The problem is government hospitals in Kenya are not well equipped and do not have the specialized physicians to handle cases like this, so we have been paying the bill from our savings and well wishers support. Due to her extended hospitalization it has become too expensive for us, so we we are requesting for help with paying the bill which is currently $ 56,000.
My mother is improving and getting physical therapy now and we pray that she will be discharged in the next two weeks to complete her recovery at home. All the donations will go towards the hospital bill. Any donations will be appreciated.
