Help with Terry’s road to recovery

- [ ] My husband is an amazing man. He’s a kind, loving, caring man. A wonderful father to 7 kids and we have 15 grandkids with one one the way. Being a grandfather, to him, is the best thing ever. He’s had a rough 3 years and he is tough. Here is his story. Back in August Terry had a triple bypass. One week later he had to have surgery again Because the wires they used to repair the sternum came apart. This time they used titanium plates. As the months drew on, we realized and the doctors realized his sternum wasn’t going to heal. They believe the radiation he had 2 years prior from him having lung cancer (which he survived and is currently in remission) killed his ability to heal properly. It was literally falling apart in there. After searching for a doctor that could take his case, we found one in Indy. Actually a couple, a husband and wife team that was willing to fix him. The Husband would remove the sternum and the wife would make a flap out of his muscles to cover the heart. On December 17th, he went into surgery. During the surgery the doctor found live bone. He thought if he saved the live bone, it would benefit Terry in the long run so he didn’t remove it all. In recovery, Terry coughed so hard that his sternum pushed against his left ventricle and tore it. (That cough is something he hasn’t been able to get rid of since his radiation treatments two years ago.)We almost lost him. He had to be rushed back to the OR to fix his Heart. They believed putting him in a drug induced coma was the safest thing to do after that. They let him rest and heal some for 3 days. On Monday December 21st, they went back in and removed the whole sternum. Then on the 22nd, they made the flap. Now Terry is starting a long road to recovery.
