The Engleman Family

I send you this message at the request of Jennifer Engleman with the heaviest of hearts. It is with tremendous shock and sadness that Kevin Engleman, Blake and Cole’s dad, has succumbed to injuries associated with a fall where he sustained critical head injuries. After an amazing day watching Blake, and the team, play water polo they decided to have dinner at Chili’s in Aliso Viejo. Kevin excused himself to wash his hands, as he was prone to do. After not returning for longer than what felt right, Blake went to check on him. The bathroom was closed. Unbeknownst to him, the paramedics were preparing him for transport. Kevin had fallen for an unknown reason and sustained massive head injuries. Blake returned to the table to tell Jennifer when the manager approached them sensing something was wrong. They asked about the restroom and the manager notified them that Kevin was being taken by ambulance at that very moment. They ran to catch the ambulance but just missed it. Kevin had the car keys so they were stuck without a car. Blake wisely suggested that they call Kevin’s phone. Whoever was with him would answer. They did and a paramedic answered. He told Jennifer where they were headed. After getting a ride from friends, because Kevin had the car keys, they arrived at Saddleback Memorial hospital. Ongoing attempts were made to resuscitate and stabilize Kevin. He needed to be prepped for a very difficult surgery requiring a neurosurgeon. They were told he may likely not survive. If he did he would likely have permanent damage to an undefined extent and would never be the same again. Surgery was performed. Kevin’s brain had tragically gone too long without oxygen and no brain activity was detected. He is currently on life support which has given loved ones time to say goodbye. Jennifer and the family have made the difficult and courageous decision to donate his organs stamping Kevin’s legacy as a hero who is directly responsible for saving and improving the quality of lives of people he does not even know. We should all be blessed to have the conviction of faith, selflessness and courage to make such a generous decision.

Jennifer wanted to be sure that you know that while this is more overwhelming than anyone could imagine, she feels the love and support of family and friends and is grateful beyond expression. She is not yet able to process fully what has happened but still wants everyone to know just how appreciative she is. She, Blake and Cole will need us now more than ever. She has been assured that she does not stand alone and that we are now, and will continue to be, there for her and the boys.  If Jennifer receives even a tenth of the love and generosity she has given to others, they’ll have meals until Cole is a senior in college.  Please continue to keep Kevin, Jennifer, Blake and Cole in your prayers. These are the moments which define our faith and compassion; and where we are given the chance to put words into action. Cherish today, there is no promise of tomorrow.
