Save Terminally ill Irene Nel

Donation protected
Irene Nel is a terminally ill 72-year-old South African grandmother at risk of immediate removal from the UK

My mother-in-law, Irene Nel, came to visit us in the UK on 17th August 2012. Whilst here, she tragically and unexpectedly fell ill and had to be admitted to hospital at the end of August 2012.

She was diagnosed with terminal kidney disease and “end stage renal failure”. She was told that without treatment she would die within a period of weeks. She was immediately put on dialysis (three times a week) which is now keeping her alive.

She has also had a heart attack in December 2015. She is becoming gradually weaker and more frail.

Even with medical treatment here, her doctor has now told us that she has less than 3 years to live “even with sustained dialysis treatment and optimal medical care”.

The Home Office and the Courts have refused her leave to remain in the UK to live out her final days with her family, who love and care for her in her time of need.

She is now at immediate risk of removal to South Africa.

Her doctor has throughout stated that Irene is unfit to fly and that a long haul flight “would cause significant suffering” and “a very significant risk to her health”.

He also said that she should be allowed to remain in the UK and receive ongoing treatment as this is “paramount from a medical perspective” and that the ongoing stress of the threat of removal may well further contribute to her physical deterioration.

Despite all this, and despite our applications for leave to remain for her to be able to be looked after by her family , the Home Office is seeking to remove her.

When my mother-in-law last reported to the Home Office, we were told she would be detained. It was only when we reminded the Home Office that she was terminally ill and needed dialysis three times a week that they decided not to detain her.

At the moment, the Home Office making arrangements so she can be removed. We are expecting them to issue her with removal directions at any moment.

My mother has said that she would rather stop dialysis in the UK and die here in the UK with her 6 children and 8 grandchildren than be removed to South Africa where the Home Office has accepted that “dialysis is restricted there and will not be available to her as she is over 60 years of age”.

We desperately need your help to start one last legal challenge. But we cannot take this step without your support! We also need to pay for a detailed psychiatric report which is likely to cost about £1,500 and need to cover legal costs.

It is a race against the clock but we believe with your support we can make it.

Please donate to my Mum's legal fund today so we can do what is necessary to save her with your help!

Any donation is gratefully received, however small. We can only do this with your help!

We will be eternally grateful for any contribution you can make which will help us keeping my mother alive and with us in the UK.

It is a race against the clock, so please donate today.

 With heartfelt thanks,

Desree and Derek Taylor (Irene’s daughter and son-in-law)

PS: We have changed the target goal, based on current estimated costs to engage with a legal team should deportation be imminent.

Please also be advised that any money donated will be used to fight Irene Nel’s legal case to be granted leave to remain. The fund may cover the making of new applications to the Home Office, legal challenges in the courts in the UK for that purpose and deportation processes.

It is important to advise ALL donors, should Irene be granted leave to remain prior to the legal fund being exhausted, all remaining donations will be donated to the NHS trust who has being instrumental in treating Irene with her life saving dialysis in her time of need and a portion donated to International Care Network, a charity dealing with immigration cases such as ours.
